Exacly the same as in google. Applying all the SEO and the most important is getting back links with the words you need to rank for on them.

I asked for back links and now I am second for one word and 11th for another

I don't think Yahoo and Google use the same concepts.
I tried http://ranking.thumbshots.com to check the SERPs for the same keywords on both YAHOO and Google, very different results!!
Yahoo focus more on keyword density than G.

Yahoo seems to take more account of most on-page factors than Google.

Here is the definitive answer from the SEO Chat FAQ :

5.). I am number 5 in Yahoo, but not in the top 1,000 in Google. Why?

A. Yahoo and Google use two different algos to come up with their SERPs - Yahoo
favors on- page optimization such as H1 tags, keyword density, etc while Google
favors off page like in bound links. If you have done more on page then Yahoo
will rank higher and vice versa. As part of this if you are now addressing your
off page then you need more backlinks with anchor text and time for these links
to age (Google lag).

Cheers

A word to the wise, and not so wise, it is best to combine your approaches. Do not optimize just for one by only focusing towards off or on-page. If you do a better than average job with the on-page in the beginning, you will nail Yahoo and Ask. Then, if you focus on off-page for Google you will place well there. The on-page requires much less work, time and creativity. Once on-pge is done you can just keep a monitor on it. The off-page (Google) requires you to totally focus for a long time period. Do your on-page and lock it in (with minor periodic tweaks), then spend all your time on Google.
