How is this done?

Prudential Real Estate advertises that their listings can be found by going to Yahoo and typing in a code. For example, go to Yahoo search and type in the code PRU7P6V8. It should automatically redirect you to a specific listing on the Prudential site.

What I want to know is how is this done? Not from a technical standpoint, but from a marketing perspective. In other words, what Yahoo service offers this kind of redirect based on a code?

Well i tried to google the code and this post was highest ranking, now theres a suprise!

If there is an example that works then we can look at it.

My impression is that something like a code of that sort will be so unique how would you not rank for it!?

realityhack disagrees: The OP specified Yahoo. Which does redirect on the listed code.

This one is easy. It is Yahoo who will bend their standards a LOT more than Google. So get large enough that Yahoo will sit down at the table with you and work out a deal.
So in short... slip Yahoo a few million and you can work something out if they think it won't effect their regular searchers.
Once you enter the true enterprise tier new possibilities open up including custom deals.
