we've accepted twice I think, SEO contracts from companies that had been banned....and the first time the effort to try to lift the ban -- even offering to fly to CA to meet with - uh - the search engine people themselves to try to explain what had happened (client used self-made blackhat tactics, then hired a blackhat firm to go way past the TOS) didnt' work for us....too too too much time for too low an ROI.
spun off the product line, changed the name/logo/site/server/copy/banks/cc's(for PPC)/links etc....created a BRAND NEW firm...and that finally did work.
have heard anecodotally same has been done by other SEO firms at conferences, etc...
ymmv of course, but just trying to be HEARD was the real crux of the matter....and that's what we learned!!!
