WordPress theme built for eCommerce or any theme with eCommerce Plugins?

This site needs to create an archive for each category, I am seeing too many pages with old posts that we cannot reply to.

Ok, that said, I wish to ask a question to those who have more experience than I in building WordPress e-Commerce sites.

The question is: "is it better to get a theme specifically designed to sell online or get any theme and get a plugin to sell products?"

Basically which would function better and more seamlessly?

I would go for the plugin route. Why? If you're using a theme that has "extra stuff/features" baked in, what happens if you find another theme that doesn't have those features?

    Thanks for the reply.

Can you elaborate a bit more on what you mean? - especially in the context of the website owner keeping that theme for few years (normal life span of the theme).

    Appreciate it.

As an example, I sell photos on my website. I use a plugin that allows me to add sizes and prices to my shopping cart. If I change themes, the data is saved "in the plugin" and not the theme. If I used a theme that had a custom shopping cart and I decided in a few years to change themes, I need make sure my new theme has those features AL READY installed (baked in) in the theme. If they don't have those features, you'll need to find a plugin or another theme.

    Hope this makes sense.

Just to add, using a "generic" theme gives you more flexibility.

    That makes sense.

Yeppers, that makes sense and is actually a good point.

Of course the only downside is the author of the plugin stops supporting that plugin and you end up having to get a replacement, but... in comparison to the theme aspect, it's still better.

    Thanks. It helped.
