Query related to redirect from HTTP to HTTPS?

One of my friend migrated his website from old domain to new domain few months ago. Now he wants to secure the website and want to migrate from HTTP to HTTPS.

Is it OK to have chain redirection? Does it affect the rankings of the website?

Should have been done then, your just making more work, I'd just change the redirects. There's a few specialist on that subject here and I assume they'll chime in.

Good you’re taking the step to make the website secure, have a look into HTTP/2 and you may get some speed benefits too.

As for your redirect question, ideally you’d update it to the new domain with https, as you’ll lose some of the value in that extra step of the redirect. You should be able to do a find and replace in the file you created to handle the redirects in the first place.

Well done in spotting the issue. A lot don't and just add a new redirect.
This forms what is called a redirect chain, this typically is not good. As your in control of the redirects on your site and old site its a good idea to change them to point to the final URL.

The main issue here is google will follow a redirect chain for a while but will give up if it keeps getting redirected. The number of redirects it will follow is lower than you might think once you hit 4 you are in danger of google bot giving up and moving on to a different page so any link juice being passed from the original page will be lost and you could see pages that used to rank start to drop. Although true a user hitting the original page will end up at the correct page.

If the user though hits too many redirects their browser will also give up and display a error message. This number is a lot higher that google bot and is browser dependant but redirects should be kept to a minimum.
It can be hard work updating them all if you have a big site but the benefits far outweigh the pain in doing them.
