Choosing a Good Website Hosting Service

When I choose a good website hosting service, I pick them on their ratings overall, reading reviews, comparing them to other website hosts, etc.

I wanted to ask here, does anyone know any other things I need to keep in mind and use to determine if the website hosting service is a good one, especially for server speed and security to name a few?

And by all means, be technical.

Couple of other things I add:

    - avoid hosting with long term contracts - Knownhost, for example, only require 7 days notice. Why would a host need to lock you in for a year .... ?
    - check that they actually own their own servers / data centers. I've had issues in the past where 'support' say there is nothing they can do as they sub-contract servers.
    - set up Pingdom to monitor your site and keep an eye on it to see if your hosting service is starting to go down hill

I've recently had a really bad experience with Heart Internet (UK) but no one except myself to blame for that one. Didn't do the homework but followed the recommendation of the current host which was merging and assumed the data centers were remaining the same.

    Do they Own the Servers

This part I am unfamiliar with.

How can we know or check if a website host owns their own servers?

I'd suggest going to webhostingtalk.com and looking for options there. The reps of the hosting companies are prompt to respond to all your queries there

Honestly, the best bet is calling them up or talking to them on livechat. If their sales staff are knowledgeable then their technical staff seem to be also to a good standard.

The best experience I've had is: https://www.simpleservers.co.uk/120.html

They're truly phenomenal, however they are only UK based.

Ask their support if you can a demo site running on their services. Run it through gtmetrix and have a look at the waterfall, are the individual resources being loaded quickly?
