Can't get Deflate to work in .htaccess

I don't know where this question goes.....

The site I'm working on is slow as xmas, over 4 seconds to load - sometimes as much as 6. I've done everything I know to fix it and then resorted to compression of css and js files with gzip. Or, tried to resort to that.

Based on the sample configuration on this page http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_deflate.html I added the following

    AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/css text/js

to my .htaccess file in the root directory. Then I tested the page using this tool http://www.gidnetwork.com/tools/gzip-test.php and it says the home page is not compressing (it is php, but was assuming the link to .css would cause the page to show as compressing).

So then I tested the .css file and it doesn't show as compressed either.

    Would appreciate any ideas.

    Apache 2.2.14 (unix)
Frankly, I wonder who Frank is and why he has his own adverb.

I noticed lots of sites are slowed down by analytics... that I don't use... or other site feeding them... like ads suppliers and stuff. If you use any of those... try without to see... just a suggestion cause I ain't a good HTML dude...

This site has been slow since day 1. I moved to a new host optimized for WordPress, took out the slider graphics. I guess I can see if analytics is causing a problem, but it shouldn't. Other sites I have have analytics and they are not slow.

Try disabling plugins. Or Maybe reinstall wordpress core files, if you haven't done already.

    Just a few thoughts.
