Name That Filter
Google seems to be the authority on filters for this is how it legislates its algorithm. It might be beneficial if we could come up with educated guesses on a name for the face of each filter and the principle(s) behind the name? Example questions we might ask ourselves:
1) Name? 2) Why? 3) How long? 4) Avoidance? (experienced masters share trial and error) 5) Evolution of filter? (where is it heading in your opinion?) I will start off by naming a filter that has been successfully coined as the sandbox. I wont go over all the details of this alleged filter because it has been beaten to death. I believe that there is also a; 1) Trust Filter (for new sites) 2) An Aged Link Filter 3) An Affiliate Filter 4) Rapid Content Filter 5) Rapid links filter 6) Missing elements filter (search box, navigation, broken links ext) 7) Exchange filter (links) 8) Duplicate Content Filter 9) Domain Name Registration Filter (longevity of lease) 10) Internet Protocol Filter That’s my list of ten so far; I would like your comments on them as well as some names you have come up with so that we may all benefit in optimization of Google. D

Wow, Number 10 sounds dangerous - imagine if sites were filtered for using IP - could change the interent a little ;-) MCS x (I'm sure that's not what you meant, but I'm not the brightest bulb in the box) |

To some degree they are. I.E. Do you have multiple domains on a single IP and has this IP added a TON of new content recently. That's probably one of the reasons I get banned so quickly Doug: how would a missing search box get you penalized and how would Google determine this programatically? G-Man

it wouldn't, but a missing element would. Better to have no search feature, then a search feature that doesn't work, broken links, etc. |

My question would be do we know for sure all these filters really exist. I can see 4, 5, maybe 6, and 8, but question the rest. thx |

They do exist, but to what degree of impact we can all speculate... WE have many sites and we have discerned some of these impacts from filters by trial and error...How about you? Your thoughts? D |

i agree doug. we too have many sites, and i have personally seen almost every one of these take effect at some point or another. in this industry trial and error is sometimes the best you can do. <edit> except for the broken links thing.. not sure i've seen that one </edit> |

aww man.. i was hoping you'd just think harder and come up with the rest of the list... actually, to be honest, i can't think of any more filters going on. but, looking at that google patent, i can speculate on a few. - lack of content update filter (based on how often a page is updated, or lack of updates) - disappearing links filter (when a site loses many links at once it becomes 'stale' and thus drops in rankings) <edit> as i review my post i guess these aren't really filters, but more 'scoring' criteria... oh well</edit> - anchor text/page topic changing filter (when a site's anchor text or pages are changed ie. when a site about apples changes to a site about sailboats) |
