Domain Squatting Is Metamorphosing

With the probationary period of the Google Sandbox (average 8 - 9 months) an old Idea of Domain Squatting appears to be taken hold with a (2004 - 2005) twist. At least this is my observation. Not just holding the name, but makeing it go live with content.

It seems no matter how hard you work on text or back links you stay in the sand until the time-out is over.

With that being said, I see SEO’s buying domain names, adding 10 to 20 pages of content and then letting them sit (squat) for the probationary period. They (we) visit the site on rare occasions to add a little content here or there, while dumping a boatload of back links on its 6-month anniversary.

After all, it doesn’t matter right? You won't be in the top 100 anyways? Then, as the site comes to life, like a butterfly from a cocoon, you mother it like a newborn child.

With twenty children in the pipeline, the SEO along with the Future Capitalists, rest easy while waiting for the filter to end. Think about it, little has been invested in time, money or energy.

Domain Squatting -2005, may be our only hope in dealing with the box.

What are your thoughts about dealing with the box?

Yep, I do that. I now put up a basic site with about 10 pages of decent content. Feed it a few links to get it started, and then forget about it. Come back to it six months later, and start working on it for real. I do one of these a month (approximately). Not all of them will pan out in the end, but some will hit big, and in a year or two, I will have at least several that were real winners. Added to the ones I already have that are winners, I'll keep smiling.

Doug... I would agree, but would it not be easy for someone like Google to sense this? Google could put on a "watch" list any site that appears to be laying dormant with little to no BL activity & visitors? Then, all of a sudden this "dormant" site comes to life with dramatically increased activity. I would think Google would then go... hmmmmm... = the advent of "Sandbox2". Just a thought.

I would never do such a thing <fingers crossed behind my back>. ;-)
Actually, in today's environment, I can't imagine even having an idea for a site and not immediately getting something live and indexed immediately. But I still still plan on a year of low traffic. If the numbers don't make sense inside of that assumption, I don't bother with the site.

I have to admit, I really like the introduction of the sandbox. I think it will get rid of a lot of the "get rich quick" crowd. If you don't have the staying power to hang out for a year, the game is no fun anymore.

Donna,

We should coin a new name for this new-age squatting?

I will start with "Comadain" (coma - domain)

Let's see some new names thrown out there friends? Or vote for my idea of the name!

But isn't that what we do with old "out-dated" sites. Bring them to life quickly, because they were around before the florida update?

Your thoughts?

Google appears to react to changes in what SEOers and webmasters do in mass. They appear to save things up then react to blunt the activity. For example, if the "comadain" idea gains credence, and we all start doing it within the industry, it will be discussed to no end on all the forums. What do you think G's response may be? They may do absolutely nothing to this new method (sic "comadain") to get around their "sandbox", or they may.... You decide.

What you should do is build your domain, and add a few backlinks each month or every week if you have time, so it gradually gets built up and 6 months down the road it'll probably have pr2 or 3 to start with also, and theoritically avoid the "sandbox2" .

Well, we would have to shut down all seo forums and blogs if we didn't want Google to know what we do, and that's not gonna happen, so...onward.

Now, as for a name... how about SiteSitting? (site sitting around waiting to be fully developed once sandbox is lifted)

From what I've seen so far with this method, the sites I've done rank well in MSN and Yahoo during the sitting period, which gets them some natural backlinks along the way. So, they aren't completely stagnant and then suddenly getting links later. I do agree though that throwing a ton of links at the site at any point in time is not smart and could result in another sandbox period.
