Trying to increase AdSense CTR!
For a long time now I've been receiving extremely low CTR less than 0.5% consistently. I have done many things to integrate the ads into my site. I've made the ad background the same color as my page background. The link color and text color are the same as all the other links and text throughout the site. They currently flow next to my pages content with no border so they look like they belong even more. I mainly use the medium rectangle and the wide skyscraper formats.
I realize I will most likely not reach a nice 1.5% CTR or higher as I have many return visitors as I run a webmaster resource site that have over 100 tutorials. However I would really like to achieve a CTR arond 1%. Could some of you take a look at my site and make suggestions? http://www.depiction.net Last edited by SEO_AM : May 5th, 2005 at 12:08 AM. Increase your google adsense CTR
Dont mess with the color.
Dont mess with anything else... except this... Placement Now obviously you want your color to match your site somewhat, but placement is more imporant than anything! I own a Satellite Radio website where it has archived news articles and reviews, news, how-to's etc, on satellite radio. What I have done is place google adsense inbetween the paragraphs of news articles, and other articles. What this does is catch the readers eye as they are reading the content. Most websites place google adsense at the top, bottom or sides of a website, while this may get results, placing within content will increase your CTR dramatically. I achieve about a 3.45% CTR - and one of the best things is that I have the links open to a new page, this way my site is still accessable to the visitors. Visitors to a website may not find exactly what they are looking for, advertisements can help them out. Google knows this and they will place google adsense ads that relate to the content on a page. By placing the ads within content you can have highly relevant ads on your site, so relevant that your visitors may even think that the links are part of the site. Take a look at this very Small Example of this type of placement. Scott Fish Last edited by scottfish : May 3rd, 2005 at 05:48 PM. Reason: add info |

Thanks for the tip. I noticed you used the 468x68 banner instead of the medium rectangle. I have heard that the rectangles receive higher CTR. |

Well that's your reason. Your main users know exactly what adsense is and simply just dont click on the ads. You can do what ever you want to "hide" the ads but a webmaster cann point them out no matter what you do to them. EDIT. And placement helps too ;) |

I took a look around your site.
A few placement suggestions.... If you can, put those 468x60s inside the content of those tutorials. This would be viewed by your visitors as additional resources. For you - this means higher CTR. You may also want to consider a newsletter and inclusion of adsense advertising within the mesages of your newletter. I have done this with satellite radio (I excluded some of my competitors websites, of course) and it works pretty well. A "Newsletter" is much different than "spam" atleast in the minds of people interested in the content within the letter. Scott Fish ::Edit:: I like the 468x60 banner because they space out the adverts and they fit into my content better. Last edited by scottfish : May 3rd, 2005 at 06:21 PM. Reason: <edit> |

Thanks alot. I have one of my new tutorials listed on Good-Tutorials.com today and have gotten 800 views for it in the last couple hours, so I added a 468x60 in the tutorial content. I will continue to monitor it and add the banner in other tutorials. I'll take into consideration adding a newsletter.. it may also increase my site's traffic. Above the Fold
I have placed those ads all over the place. Top bottom middle left side right side you name it. I have found that in general the large rectangle that is 2 rectangles placed side by side in a table at the top of the page works best overall for most of my stuff. In some cases I have found that within the content works better. There is an eye study article I have seen the link posted here that may help answer some of your questions.

Everybody has an opinion.... I firmly believe that you can increase your ctr - significantly. I experiment CONSTANTLY and keep close records over millions of pageviews. Different colors and different placements work differently on different sites. Sometimes you can be surprised at what a change can bring. Be bold and experiment.
On this site, with this design and with this audience I think that you will do better by calling attention to the ads. I would move a rectangle to the left side (right where "WELCOME" is located now) and make them a soft gold color - use one of the lightest golds out of your top banner - one that is within the yellow range. Extensive testing has confirmed that my first hunch is frequently wrong but that is what I would try for this site... and if it upped the ctr I still would not be satisfied. Finally, if you have the same topics showing in your ads every week and they are not getting clicked, try banning some of them from your site so that different ads are served.
