Unhappy Sorry, Can't Help Any More People - Kicked out as Editor

As of today, I'm thrown out as an ODP editor. It's no surprise as I have been helping people (specifically on this forum) who PMd me get into the DMOZ for some time (by emailing category editors, looking at their queues, etc.). I only wish that I could have helped more. Bravo! to the DMOZ editor who worked long and hard to figure out who I was in order to connect me to my login name (or maybe they simply found it by IP address).

My apologies to all those who would wish for my help in getting listed. DMOZ is not a friendly place and never has been. It's a shame that it has become such a big resource. Hopefully someday soon it will collapse on itself and the arrogance of the meta community will have to find somewhere else to play Internet God...

BTW, here's what they've got on my login page:

Login Removed There was a problem with your form:

Your login was deactivated for one or more of the following reasons:

  • Repeated failure to comply with the Open Directory community's editorial guidelines and policies.
  • Continuous poor and/or abusive editing.
  • Self-promotion and biased editing, including, but not limited to, cooling your own site, title or description manipulation, unfairly editing your own sites or those with which you are affiliated.
  • Unfairly tampering with competitors' listings and submissions.
  • Inability to function well within the Open Directory community.
  • Uncivil and intentionally disruptive behavor.
  • Violation of Open Directory forum and email privacy.
  • Spamming the directory.
We do not disclose the specific details of login removals. However, the decision to deactivate your login was made by consensus of the meta community, and thoroughly reviewed by DMOZ staff to ensure that our decision was appropriate and warranted. Our decision to remove your login is final. Removed logins will not be reinstated, and you will not be granted a new login. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

Geez Rand:

You are like the robin hood of the disenfranchised SEO chat community. If you really want to get back at that group you ought to PM your topic to others who feel the same and want to become an editor.

Hi Randfish,

I am very sorry to hear of this. I wasn't aware of your DMOZ ties or the fact you were the "Robinhood" of the forum....This is a sad day then, espcially with the importance DMOZ plays in Google ranking potential. It really is a shame that many deserving quality sites don't get the opportunity to be listed become of.....certain biases.

Unfortunately, as long as there continued to be ties between Netscape & AOL, DMOZ is destined to continue playing an important role in G's algo for what it Once stood for.

I make it a point not to complain about DMOZ any longer so I think I will end here before I go on a rant....

Yep that is exactly what DMOZ should do... get rid of all the helpful, competent, devoted editors... yep that is exactly what they should do.

Randfish, now you have time to devote to other endeavors. I am truly sorry to see the goodguys get knocked.

It was only a matter of time. I certainly tried to figure out who you were. The problem is that you were never a team player, and went around bad mouthing ODP. I could never undertand why you wanted to stay an editor, if you hated the origanization so much.

I prefere a directory of sites that have not required any help to get listed. If a site needs help to get listed in a directory, then it could be a site that does not deserve a listing.

Oh that's great! Way to go Rand!

I suspect that cbp will be by to chime in any time now....

Come on guys...Simply take it on the chin and admit that the ODP is a corrupt, self serving, self important, elitist, humanly unused has been of an era gone by whose only audience are the automatons of the Internet...and the editors themselves of course.

The ODP can't even give a real reason for anything. They spew out the same type of vague foolishness when they reject an applying editor, it's absolutely ludicrous!

There; I ranted for you GC!

At least you're in good company. Rick Skrenta was recently booted as well.

Good thing the ODP is dropping the rotten apples - hehehe.

Still, I have the slight feeling that your M.O. was not subtle enough to ensure a long "editorship" there...

One more currupt self-serving editor bites the dust. ODP proves once more that humans do it better.

Then why does everyone spend so much time talking about it, and trying to get their sites listed. Please spend your energy trying to get Google to drop us, please, please.

Does Google ignore you? Is it because Google won't make your sites list with the PR you want, is it that Google does not respond to your complaints? Is it because Google is corrupt, self serving, self important and elitist?

rand - I'm sure you didn't spam the ODP with cr@ppy sites, did you? I presume it was more like an alternative method (i.e. one of many possible methods) to determine the source of your edits and the order in which you processed them???

Let's not exaggerate

IMO, whatever you may think of the ODP, check on past posts from SEO Rat. He/She is one of the good guys/gals.

I like both Rand and Seo_Rat so hopefully this doesn't start to get ugly. As I see it, Randfish did nothing ethically wrong and was only trying to do something that in the end benefits DMOZ as it improves the quality of listings. I don't think Randfish would be pushing Spam sites.

But when it comes down to it, dealing with sites this way is against DMOZ's rules and agree with them or not, its a reason to be kicked out. Although I'm sure Randfish was trying to do what he thought was best for DMOZ, imagine if this was always allowed. It would just open the system up to even more of the "corruption, et al" that gr8ted claims. Sometimes you have to just accept the uniformity of the rules.

We don't obviously know any of the details but it seems as though both Rand and Seo_Rat are correct.

Randfish - Hold your head high, theres certainly no shame in trying to do things the right way and you can wear this like a badge of honour.

I agree, I've got nothing against seo_rat, to the contrary, I think he's repeatedly shown integrity, although his loyalty is misplaced.;) I might add that there are levels of corruption, and when I say corrupt, I'm talking corruption through arrogance and pride.
