Cool Is it time to Reverse Engineer our Methods?

  • It is time that we look thru the picture and not at it.
  • Lets face it the guys/gals at google know how we think!
  • So if you wanted to give the "smart" seo's a punch on the nose and some work to do what would you do?
  • I would work against them by reversing the game by working in opposites.
  • You target your keyword in the title - they ignor the title
  • You use H1 tag - the focus on H2 tag
  • You ignor keywords - they actually start looking at it again.
  • You ignor the description - they don't show it but actually put a weight on it.
  • You collect inbound links BUT they put more weight on outbound links!!!!
  • and so on.....
I hope this thread will start making us think thru the picture and contribute to a whole new approach.
Conduct your own research and share it here.

I agree with your thinking, however your examples of what would be reversed I am pretty much happy to say I dont agree with. Such as the title? What are people going to put? Untitled Document? LOL

I understand your point though, I have a few other threads going along similar lines about googles new approach, however what we must remember is that us as an SEO community give google a lot of money, especially with ad words etc.

Plus google like the good SEO's ...

http://www.google.co.uk/intl/en/webmasters/seo.html

So I cant see that would do much to upset us directly. But they will do things to help their results stay relevant for users. If a side effect is some of our "thought processes" and "attitudes" to SEO being shaken up a bit, so be it, but we will get into a new routine and used to a "new" google as we have done every time before.

I have another thread about the jumping possibly being a standard thing now and that they results will not "settle" so as to keep results diverse for users, however I think it is another case of waiting till at least the middle of Jan before making any concrete "idea changes" or comments on the recent activity.

Lol...

I like the idea. We shouldn't exactly *reverse* our thinking (as in putting outbound links instead of inbound links! ), but the idea is important, we have to probably make tests about new ideas, and see how they actually affect the SERPs.

And no, i was not in a basement doing SEO / coding etc. LOL I was out at a nightclub, though in hindsight, that probably wasnt such a good idea on a work night.

Nice and detailed
Well done.

Im eating lunch so wont be anywhere as exhaustive and will keep it to points.
  • Google needs us SEO folks, we help clients spent a lot on ad words too
  • Google updated the adwords system earlier this year
  • Google needs to make money, especially now it is public
  • It wont destroy SEO as it needs it, but it will bend things more towards paid adverts
  • Google still wants relevant results for users. If they dont give them, they dont get the users, they lose money.
At the end of the day, google will always make changes. it has too. However they will never destroy anything, they may be a business, but they are not a dumb business. All of us here see the effect of a change 100times more than a "consumer" does as to a certain extent our living depends on making sure we know how to work with these changes.

Even after all the recent change and the change that will surely come, we will notice, the other 99% of users wont. Google knows we exist for sure, but it wont set out to destroy the only people that help it stay in the news and work out what to do next.

TTFN - back to food

One small problem with the outbound links...

All those crappy sites that return yahoo's top 20 result for "green fish" (or whatever) as a page to give relevant content would take over...

I agree that more and more of these site are featuring in the serps today but then we'd all start using this method...

>>>>It wont destroy SEO as it needs it,

Dunno about that - google used to be a great search engine before people started manipulating it. If SEO dropped off the planet tomorrow, google would be just fine - there would be even more need for people with crappy sites to pay for AdWords to get their sites noticed.

Google is not against SEO, read this and you can see Google's advice about SEO, it doesn't say 'DON'T USE SEO'.

Hit a page two site and watch. I would venture it's relevant to the number of inbound established links. So, if the site has a 1000 links I bet the affect would be devistating as this would absolutely be un-natural. Be sure to factor the PR of the site you are linking from and the PR of the site your are linking to. I venture G feels it has immunized its top results by this time or it would not have made this last update. Would love to see someone test this.
Whomever wants to try this, get in touch with me. You can point links to my site any day of the week and I won't mind.

Contrary to popular opinion, there are ways that a site could get thousands of backlinks in a short period of time naturally. I would not say that it would be a common thing but it could happen.

I just wish I could be one of those uncommon sites

While I enjoyed the post, I don't think it's the end of SEO. SEO will *always* be around. Google has a system. There is always - I repeat - always - a way to game the system. That's what SEO is. You can call it whatever you want but you're trying to game the system and make your site appear higher than someone elses. Whether you play by the rules (white hat) or not (black hat) or somewhere in between (grey hat) you're still gaming the system.

I do agree with you in that Google is probably shooting themselves in the foot. However, the neat thing about this is that there are quite a few competitors. So, as SEO folks, we watch the other engines as well. At some point the other engines might overtake Google - especially if you're correct and Google produces non-relevant results. When that happens, we'd simply switch to another engine.

As always, think outside the box as the person who started the thread was trying to say and test test test!

Edit: One other thing that occurs to me. If SEO dies for Google, folks like Egol will come out ahead with their build good fresh content daily strategies Oh wait - that can be gamed too with a good database and a nice script

If we didnt perform SEO on sites the way we all currently do, there would be much less information for google to work with.

Ofcourse the spammy stuff does not fall into this statement, but if we didnt optimise, tweak, link with names, backlink, exchange links, do titles, write decent content, essentially optimise pages, google would struggle to get the better data. Remember the days when you made a website, it was in the engines the next day and nearly always at the top? If all sites had continued to just be put up as they were then there would just be a mass of similar sites.

I am aware, as is everyone else, that private clients can get adwords, however the vast majority of people, especially businesses, that get a website built often hire people to build it and dont know anymore than that. They think that if they have a website it will be found. This is why SEO has become more common place, why more SEO companies have appeared, and why more "numb skulls" in the business industry are starting to know about search engines and that they are important. However that is all they know, they still get people like us to help. Again, what we do is sort information so google can use it. This is the bond between the engines and SEO, each one essentially helps each other.

Search engines are for the most part a free directory service with millions of people viewing them. The payment is to make your site friendly for the engines so that they can use your information to help their "cusomters" / "users".

We need the engines, the engines do not NEED us, but it certainly makes life easier and better for them that we exist.

TTFN
Dave
