Homepage penalized while subpages keep PR
Saw a site yesteday first thing that morning that went from a PR8 to a PR0 with this new update, the interesting thing is that the subpages of the site still hold their pagerank value as if it was passing from the homepage. The even wierder thing is that a backlink check on the homepage will return all the results. A backlink check on the subpages that still retain a PR, have none.
The ranking of the site seem to have disappeared completely. I am guessing from looking at the site that heavy intense link buying or duplicate sites is what caused this. But its a bit hard to explain with such odd toolbar readings. What do yall think? Additionally, there is another thread at about this, so its not isolated: http://forums.searchenginewatch.com...p=6055#post6055

Phoenix, results of this update are all over the map. So far I see no obvious logic on the part of Google. If it is not a major screwup by Google then it must be some major algo adjustments. With all the problems being reported as far as PR and BLs I have not seen anyone reporting major drops or increases in SERP placement. Go figure.

My Opinion
Personally I felt that it's a glitch on google part.
Look at this website www*singaporeair.com Its the official website for Singapore Airline, one of the top airline in the world. It used to be PR8, now PR0. All internal pages also PR0. Its alexa ranking is 7000+. In google, if you search for Singapore, (very competitive term since its a country), it's position is still number 6 amond 21 million websites. I have seen all the backlinks and all are legitimate backlinks from those airports, airlines etc. I do not think they had been penalized. Something went wrong on google part. |

irrelevant pagerank
Ok the following example is exactly like the site I observed:
Quote:
Click on a subpage and you get a PR8! What in the world, it would take a decade for a site like that to reach that level. Additionally I am saying text link buying because this site just like the site I observed bought exclusively a huge large amount of links from sites selling them. The the example above they bought links on one site and one site only it seems. Take a look at the sites at the bottom of the page, they are either buying links or using the PR of a higher source to distribute to this newer sites. Appears not to be working. Its like Google, stepped on these sites like a ballon but instead of them popping, all the PR just flattened out to the subpages. Also, I would post the link to the site I observed but its not my site. If interested let me know and I will PM the link to anyone. |

Doesnt google have a minor penalization where just the offending page is penalized, but the rest of the site is left intact? I have heard that before and it sounds like it could be happening here. Maybe they were trading/selling links on their front page, and google caught them and decided to just smack em in the butt a bit? Thats what it looks like is happeneing.....IMO....

Well, I do not belive in that theory. This newspaper www*itavisen*biz has also lost the PR on the frontpage, it's an online serious newspaper about IT in Norway, and has nothing to do with that theory. I just think that something wen't wrong. I see so many sites that should have been penalized for much worse things than trading links, but aren't, so I belive Google just have screwed up.

Rabbit, thats a good idea. Yes this does happen with duplicate content pages, sometimes they get dropped or loose PR. However I have seen a lot more whole site penalizations than just individual pages.
Possibly they are experimenting with this, and from recent activity my google in regards to risk management its undertaking (penalizations for mouseover redirects, javascript spidering, duplicate sites), its not doubt they are working on something. Maybe they thought it was a more humane way to go about penalizing these sites. OR they are using a filter for these types of links, characteristics etc.. Also, does anyone see an issue with how google is spidering internal links. It seems that in a few of my sites I have lost links (in backlinks) for internal pages, links still there, rankings never changed. Similar with the penalized sites, subpage have no internal links or any links at all. So sites like singaporeair.com and the news site, could be experimenting an internal linking issue?? Have the lost rankings on the online news sites? Last edited by Phoenix : July 20th, 2004 at 01:21 PM. |

PR6 to PR0 - Feel My Pain
I'm the webmaster for the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (http://www.ric.org). After the last dance this month my home page's pagerank plummeted to 0. Strangely enough, pages within the Web site have a PR of 5 or so.
While I have optimized the pages on the site, I haven't used illegal or any spamming techniques. I've asked Google about this issue, but have only received a very generic reply regarding my complaint. Any ideas on why my site has taken such a big PR hit? There are over 600 links that connect the home page of the Web site. Also, an suggetsions on how to rectify the PR0 ranking would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help. Nick |

I had a PR4 go to gray on www.quit4good.com and exactly what everyone is talking about happened - still PR on inner pages but homepage is banned...
I don't push the site much at all and I don't see any logic at all for it to be removed,,,,, It was in DMOZ and Google Direcotory - But I believe it has been removed from the Google directory since the homepage ban.... Nice little free site.... Doesn't make any sence at all.... :|
