Social Bookmarking... New Category?
As I was trying to "place" new threads about this subject (which inevitably are posted in Google Optimization or Link Popularity), I wondered whether...
With the rise in influence of Social Bookmarking on SEO (and the web in general), should we have a new category? (Perhaps within "Search Engine Strategies").

I think Social Networking would be more broad to address networks like Facebook, LinkedIn and all other related topics. Bookmarking could fall under or within it.
Maybe Web 2.0 would be more appropriate. |

Technically no matter whether it's bookmarking, paid, free, 1-way, reciprocal, or some other version of "developing some form of linkage to improve ranks".... it's all Link Popularity...
The "social aspect" only defines the quality of the linkage... the more "social the bookmark is the higher the quality and the more powerful the bookmark... thus better ranks occur. ..Web 2.0 doesn't have anything to do with SEO. Even those that are deeply involve in it can't agree on what it is; other than it's "cool jargon".

New forums need to be defined by the volume of threads that the generalized topic spawns in a given period.
If social bookmarketing spawns 10 threads a day... I would suggest it could survive as a standalone forum... but if it's only 10 threads a month... surely you can see the limited amount of use that forum will have. |

Personally...I tend to agree with fathom. I know I think there are to many non read forums at the moment. I know I only ever vist about 5 or 6. I know I suggested a new one recently and got only one response. I think that there should be a consolidation of some of the forums. I also think that to many forums just encourages everyone to post there threads in google optimization as many others do not get read. I know I get PMs asking me to respond to threads in other forums I never visit.
I am al in favour of a major overhall of the forums and ditching those which get no activity. Also creating some new ones. It just seems old things that are done are never taken away and new ones added. maybee a zero increase policy is in order ie a new forum requires an old one to be retired.... Edit to give example Quote:

Social Bookmarking IMHO does not have a factor on SEO. Perhaps your identity or to get wider visitors but generally no direct effect.

No disrespect intended - but your posted discussions don't support your conclusion. No forum; 'any forum' is there for topic lurkers... (that's merely a benefit of the forum development - not the design or purpose of it though) the forum itself is for topic posters... and the only post you have made in social bookmarking... is e're, ahem, this one. While you've shown vocal support for such a forum your own posting actions don't support its usefulness. The search function is far more useful... at least until you start posting (and many.many members start posting) on social bookmarking each day... A dead 'not used much' forum... isn't overly useful... ...wouldn't you agree? Last edited by fathom : April 16th, 2008 at 08:59 AM. |
