Shoutbox Wrapping

To avoid unnecessary wrapping of our forums due to long posts in shoutbox, we changed shoutbox post limit to 255 characters. And also introduce new word wrap around text to keep fix horizontal width.

Some of the better shouts contains a lot more than 255 characters, so I do not think the idea is good. It is nice however that yuo fixed the horizontal width problem.

You will just have to break your shouts (spams) into smaller chunks but then you get the flood protection problem rearing its ugly head again

But this is appauling!!! How am I supposed to compose the kind of statements I need in the SHOUT!!!! box with a pultry 255 characters?

It's outrageous!

Who is this Thaminda anyway? I've never seen him / her / it (supposing that "Thaminda" is a robot) in the SHOUT!!!!! box?

Give me the length and breadth I need to SHOUT!!!!!

Please (I suppose)

It's very easy to impose limits on others while gloating from a distance! I am outraged, annoyed and feel totally downtrodden.

(a very pissed off)

Hmmm.... the admins seem to have a logical flaw. See below for my analysis

Problem they want to fix: shouts being so long it affects the width of the site.
Possible solutions:
1. Limit the length of the shouts
2. Have the shouts automatically wrap to the next line after a specified length/width is reached.

Either of these would solve the problem. So, what do the admins do? Overkill! They implement both. Well, if the autowrap eliminates the problem, then using the max character limit along with the wrap makes the character limit prohibitive/punative and not a problem solver.

Just my 2 cents here.

I can accept a limit on the shouts on the front page, but why not let people read the full shouts here

You guys must be pretty long-winded, then. The previous limit was ungodly huge and as I recall took up some significant server space. With the 255 limit, the server storage gets a break and likely you have a slightly more responsive website. This is purely conjecture on my part, I'm not a DBAdmin.

Why are your shouts so lengthy? Would you not be better served spewing these diatribes in the regular forums?

Thaminda is one of the six admins working for JCaputo. The reason you see little of him in these forums is because he is very busy making sure this and the other Dev sites are running smoothly, as well as implementing changes small and large throughout the domain as requested by users such as yourselves.

From what I've seen, the Dev staff have been very accessible and accommodating, though the lower-priority stuff can take a while to implement. Generally, if there's a "no" involved, it's JC who comes in and explains why, and it's the bottom line with him.

Hi Dngrsone.

I can't imagine that long shouts take more storeage space than
long posts, and still we don't have a 255 character limit to posts!

The shout box is lively entertaining and as is currently occurring allowing for "interesting and entertaning" posts. As you are aware, DP's forum has an amazing amount of free flowing fun stuff.

Frankly most of the time it has twice as many or more active members on line than seo chat.

SEO chat has rigourously stuck to SEO content. Over time many of its active members have migrated elsewhere.

Its a good healthy outlet. Why restrain it?

Dave

I agree with you there. I maintain that the forums would require more than 255 characters in order to facilitate the teaching/learning process, whereas the shout is more of a cheap IRC hack than anything else.
