OK. Serious reply here...

Looks like reps with 0 points are hidden from view. This allows members the opportunity to bypass the 'spread reputation around' feature by posting lots of meaningless, hidden rep.

I'd suggest either making them (0 point votes) public or not counting them against the rep spread...

Bernard, forgive me, but you lost me there. Could you try explaining that once more, so I can get what you're saying? Thanks.

I'm just thinking that if one of the more angry and irrational members here, like say EGOL for example , got angry at someone, they could spread a bunch of 0 rep votes as necessary to be able to send neg rep votes with value to the target of their affection repeatedly under the current system - in effect bypassing the 'spread rep before giving this user more rep' control.

After I posted my note above though, I realized that the 10 votes/24 hours does help limit this potential problem.

So, in other words, if you give 0 points to joe blow, and then try to give rep to joe blow again, it lets you? You don't get the 'spread rep before giving this user more rep' message then? If so, I can see why that would be a bit of a concern.

No.

If EGOL decided that randfish needed to be shown a lesson, he could:

neg rep randfish 6 points (or whatever)
pos rep Joe Blow #1 0 points
pos rep Joe Blow #2 0 points
...
pos rep Joe Blow #10 0 points
neg rep randfish 6 points (or whatever)
pos rep Joe Blow #11 0 points
pos rep Joe Blow #12 0 points
etc..

The 0 point votes are meaningless and easily used to manipulate the system so that "real" votes may be cast again for cronies or victims.

Ah, all you SEO's - always trying to figure out ways to work the system...

I'm not sure someone would really go to those lengths, and if they would, I think they would make themselves known as less than desirable in other ways. However, if it did happen, I could see people wanting to have their reputation manually exonerated. As a forum owner, I would not want that can of worms opened.

FYI, if you disagree with someone, it only takes half. If you have rep of 4, it'll take two away.

The whole "enter rep points" was spurred on over on the Devshed forums, btw. The rep system took off like mad there with uses having reputation powers over 20. If you couldn't enter a value and wanted to disagree with a new user, you'd send them right into the red with one disagree (they start at 10 points).

So we all wanted the option to dole out partial points.
