Question Any interest in SEO Wiki project?

Is anyone in the community interested in creating an SEO wiki project - it could either be a free-for-all or an invitation only type page. In either case, it might be very advantageous to have a resource collection project for SEO terms, theories, testing projects, resources, etc. in wiki format that could be used and pointed to by the community.

If there is great interest, I'll be happy to set it up and host it.

I only first read about wiki4seo last week. I guess the concept is pretty new to us SEOers. Most don't even know what it is. I like to think of it as a scientific guestbook, but instead of posting new stuff, we can all edit the first post. I feel hesitant to spill my guts on a wiki, TBH.

Please tell us: why should we get into this wiki business again?

If you're not familiar with wikis, I would guess that the place to start would be at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki

An SEO wiki (at least in my view) would include a large glossary of terms, a list of theories, research, links, tools, etc. that could be accessed by the community. It's no more/less public/private than a forum - it just has different benefits and could be more of an 'expert' resource with some authority.

I too have concerns about bad info and spammers, etc. which is why I was asking if it should be an invite-only type wiki... I think it could prove valuable, but maybe it's too early to start.

Having looked at what a wiki is, why not base it around the SEO Chat forums ideas on being given a .sig i.e. 100 post and 90 days. I'm certainly not competent enough to contribute much at the moment, but by 100 posts and 90 days I would hope that would change and one less thing to think about

Not sure if this is feasible or not (SEOchat controlling/hosting it - using current database calculating the .sig availability, or people wanting this level of control etc ), but it sounds good to me. Definitely needed to be as idiot proof as possible, if I'm ever to contribute to it :-) (says me who has only just arrived).

I've written up 2 or 3 pieces on wikis and their use with seo (as im sure rand knows) over the last few weeks. The general consensus has been that for seos, they're just too open to abuse...

Let me clarify my idea a little more - I'm notoriously hard to understand after 3pm.

I'm suggesting a wiki website that lists the following items:
  • A glossary of SEO terms, acronyms, etc. with detailed definitions
  • A list of SEO theories and speculations
  • A list of links to important, relevant articles
  • Links to Tools or direct tools on the site for SEO like rank checkers, link checkers, etc.
  • Dozens of other important SEO stuff - coverage of daily SEO news, site review sections, tutorials, etc.
The site could be invitation-only, so that only experienced posters and SEOs would be invited to contribute. Or, it could be secured by having people log in before editing. There's plenty of ways to keep the security - I was just thinking it might make for an excellent SEO resource...

I'm not talking about using wikis for SEO purposes, I'm talking about creating a wiki for the SEO community.

Would you be running ads on that if the idea took off? - or would it be an ad free ressource?

I ask becuase i would be far more inclined personally to contribute to an ad free one...

you could always use ads like digitalpoint does, like a shared ad revenue thing, so that contributors see some benefit back.

No, I wouldn't run ads... I don't see the value - Maybe if the project took off it would be something for the community to discuss in a few years, but I actually don't even know how to run ads - it' not my bag, baby

Thumbs up

I'm definitely interested. i think just the concept of wikis in itself is the ultimate way to promote collaboration.
I suppose as far as an seo wiki is concerned, I would be interested, IF it was for expert seo ideas, challenges, inside news, developments, etc. I think making it too basic would be of no value at all. there are so many websites and forums already that in essence talk about the same thing over and over again.

not necessarily asking for an underground seo society...that of course would defy the purpose of the wiki.

but it would be great to create something NEW, unique and informative. something that's not already talked about backwards and forwards on thousands of forum threads and seo tutorials for beginners.

How about something juicy?

always a good idea to check the date of the post you're replying to.

I forgot.

I'm only several months late.

If the idea has already been put into action, please...someone, let me know.

Lightbulb god! what a coincidence

this is not fair! lol, I've already started to build a website about seo stuff. GOsh Randfish, you stole my idea!
Actually I saw this post today, I am working a kind of Seo site which is similar to your idea, but it has more shallow content at the moment.
I am still working on it, hasn't finished yet.
If anyone wants to contribute for the sources like forum and blog management, acquiring links and have some new ideas, might be more useful for Seo community.
well it is still at draft stage, but any idea will be considered seriously!

Well, the wiki idea is still fun... In other words a couple of pages that everyone can edit. You could restrict to members-only, but that would put up an "un-wiki-like" threshold.

You could start about a dozen pages about methods and facts that change a lot in the world of SEO. For example about ranking algos, or "the best online SEO tools to date"... People then edit those pages if something new comes up.

You have to keep an eye on spam (see for example the trulyopendirectory.com ) but it's fun and it's different too, at least in a niche like SEO. No-one needs Y.A. General Wiki, but a dedicated one could be valuable. And if set-up right, perhaps even popular...
