In context it doesn't... It you believe the optimization value is about "BETTER RANKS!"

If you believe the optimization value of SMO to SEO is about building additional traffic from non-traditional search engines channels like google plus, facebook, twitter, linkedin, youtube, etc., regardless of how well you rank in Google, Bing, Ask and search partners... then it works great!

Optimizing in social media and getting traffic from social media, has become one of the important part for search engines.

Those are two completely different thoughts that contradict each other.

Yes social media is about getting traffic from social media channels ...

But no, there is absolutely no impact on search engines... simply because the social channels all use rel="nofollow" thus every link is dropped from the link graph.

Speculating that a social signal can enhance search ranks due to UX is preposterous without any evidence.

Social platforms have a secondary effect. They are not directly connected to your SEO effort. But, if you promote your content, if it becomes viral and reaches influential bloggers within your industry, they just might link to you and provide some boost to your ranking.

Yes, but that's like catching a butterfly by singing on the rain.

I must agree with fathom on this.
