    Hi All

    Just a question,

If you start following people on social media, does it have a positive impact on SEO

Not directly. It will increase your visibility and someone might check out your content and maybe share it, that would be a positive impact. But just the number of people you follow does nothing.

I'd give some of the stickied threads in this section a read. You can also use our advanced search function to search our full archives by keyword and date: Advanced Search - SEO Chat Forums

Do you have any specific questions about social media? Comprehensive guides are difficult to put together, and our forums are already a great resource for general queries.

I think it depends on what social media platform you're using. On Twitter, seek out influencers and Twitter chats in your niche. Engage with them, make connections, share content - and not just your own.

I don't personally understand Facebook as well as other platforms.

Google+ doesn't get a lot of attention but its communities are full of activity. Find a niche community with real people in it and engage with them.

A lot of it is about making personal connections. That's not always easy to do as a brand, but there are certainly a lot of success stories. So it's not impossible either

In general, I think images do well on all social platforms. Humor is great, too - but also can be risky.

To better respond to your question, lets start with the definition of SEO:

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine's unpaid results—often referred to as "natural," "organic," or "earned" results. (Source: Wikipedia)

So, in order for your practice "starting following people on social media" to have any impact on SEO, it would have to have an impact on the visibility of the page in the SERPs.
But as we know, all the links from social media are marked as no-follow in order to prevent spam, so they aren`t passing any link juice => they aren`t afecting the visibility of the page in the SERPs => they aren`t affecting SEO in any way.

    Short answer: NO
The only thing that social media can bring you is traffic, and if you do a good job with it, it can bring you targeted traffic, that`s about it.

Pages with a lot of high-quality followers rank better in searches. High-quality followers are real followers on your social channels, and a large percentage of them engage or interact with you in some form.

Social media marketing is different from SEO and it does not affect or contribute to your ranking. However, social media is still relevant as there are now a lot of websites that you can use to build your own branding/reputation through social media alone. The power of social media is it can be an alternative source for you to get a lot of traffic to your website.

Whatever you do, you need to be very careful when it comes to social media. For example, you can start adding people, they might add you back and for a moment, it may seem that you have large following. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that it will convert well. In fact, it may turn out that most of your "friends" are not even interested in your product. They might have added you so that they can increase their own following. Also, for many people, number of friends\followers are an important social norm. Those who have lots of them feel as if they are more important, wanted, desirable etc. In that regard, connecting to them can be a big waste of time. My suggestion is to always target people within your niche or those who are using similar products\reading similar blogs. This way, even if they are connecting to you for their own interest, they might click on your links from time to time, just out of professional curiosity. Then again, it also depends on your particular industry or niche. If you are selling or writing on something specific such as ball bearings, you will have to have pinpoint targeting. If you are into beer or fashion, you can basically add any guy or a girl (beer for guys, fashion for girls ).

Do you have any evidence of that? Can you share an authoritative source? If not, please do not share mere hearsay without clarifying that it is such on this forum.
