Site by Doug Reid - A hobby I keep adding to
Hello
I just keep adding to my Site when I get ideas. It is currently a hobby (No selling or anything that I think is negative in any way). www.reiddoug.com I will be working on this for the next century or as long as I can. ---- Darrin: You keep adding informative (Rooms). I enjoy the Subject-headings since I can get to an area of interest quicker. Thank you. Doug |

Hi Doug, I went to your site after you joined and when I clicked on a link to another page from your homepage, it put me in a mind-numbing javascript loop. An alert box opened asking asking me if I wanted the new content loaded into a new frame, as I was given no option but okay, this opened a new frame and another alert asking the same question, this coninued forever with an amazing cascade of frames filling my window. Unfortunately, I was enjoying the remains of a Guiness and collapsed into my own cascade of giggles. I wasn't laughing at you, we've all started somewhere -I shudder to think of the ghosts of my early sites lurking in Berkely's archives.... I was trapped, and worse, I had my browser preference set to open last window viewed, so I couldn't even quit and restart Netscape, without the loop starting again. Whilst the alert was open I was pretty much frozen into your window. It was late, so it took me awhile to figure out I could open a new bookmark and gain access to my preferences. I had meant to email you but I was extremely busy over the last few weeks and it slipped my mind. If it helps I was on a Mac G4, OSX, NNS 7. This is why I am hesitant to go to your site now, unless you have corrected the bug. BTW, it isn't really necessary to inform someone that you are using frames. These alerts are best used for validations, etc. "alert: please enter a valid email, phone number or zip code..." I hope you get your site fixed, you've chosen a daunting hobby. 8) -cris

although, (I can say this because he never comes hear) my partner once listed a medical traction device under "exercise products" --it showed a picture of a woman with a neck brace attached to a rope "literally hanging" from a door... exercise? ...I know for a fact it was the Guiness ;-) |

You had mentioned (Netscape) when you tried my site. I had never tried Netscape before since I have had problems in the past. I tried my site, a few minutes ago, in Netscape, and it went into an horible loop of windows that I could not get out from. ---- I have always used PC, UNIX, and Macintosh. These were giving me enough problems. I though I had them fixed?! Now I have a headache. ---- The Javascript is not suppose to work unless the page is not open in its frame. I was having this probem when Google showed my Frame and insert pages. I will have to work in it. Sorry Doug |

I tend to be a bit of a stickler on this subject. I believe that when we put a web site up with access to the public, -we have an obligation to assure it's behaviour on most systems and browsers. I am not saying this smugly, it is indeed a headache, it is why the professionals get paid so well. It involves a lot of (wo)man hours and wizardry. I am curious to why you want to use frames; at the very least, from an SEO perspective -(I won't go into design issues, it's not for this forum.) they were always problematic, Gringo, has this changed? Simplicity is elegance in design and function. good luck coding ttfn -cris |

Google follows frames no problem, but I agree it's a lot easier in terms of SEO to optimise a site without frames. There is really very little need for frames at all today. And yes, a good recommendation for all sites is to check with non-IE browsers. I always have a copy of Netscape 4.7 at hand for testing - that really makes sure your site is compatible. Opera is another good one. Gringo. |
