It's just a hobby

www.woodenpropeller.com

I have no webmastering experience, but my hobby is collecting wooden propellers, so I started this from scratch.

Under the key words "wooden propeller", Google and other search engines pull up useless links for someone trying to find out information about most wooden propellers.

I'd like to get listed on Google and other engines, but there's no financial incentive to pay for SEO, but can I change items in the text, layout, links, etc. which will do the same thing?

I had previously hosted some photos on the site and Google picks up the old Index searching "woodenpropeller" (one word). I'm waiting to see if I get ranked now that the dance has started. The site has only been up in its revised state since the end of February.

Thanks for any help. This is a fascinating site you have for "bystanders" like me.

Dave

You need more content text on the opening page, much more. Go into why you collect them, more about what someone may find in the site, etc.

Then take your styles off the page, and put them into an external stylesheet and link the sheet. Same goes for the javascript.

Use the CSS for all formatting properties. then move the text up on the code, it seems you are using CSS-P for positioning, and with that, since the positions are defined in the DIV tags, you can move the content div to the first spot on the page and put the logo etc after it. Take a look at my page code, I have my head stuff, then the very first thing you see in my code, and what the SEs see, is the content, the naviagation and the top logo all follow the content... works great.

Wow. I should have known to be careful to ask for advice that I might not fully understand. I understand enough of it to try some changes, though and will start there first. I'm totally new at this and need to start at ground level...

Thanks for the input. Maybe it's time for me to enroll the services of an actual webmaster!

Jeepers. I thought I had done everything wrong and now after the first dance exposure it comes up in the top position on Google using "wooden propeller identification". It's 32 on Yahoo using "wooden propeller" (the preferred keywords), and already shows up on MSN and who knows what else. That's without a single backlink, and of course a PR1 at this point.

I can attribute all that to just one thing -- no competition!
