Cool http://www.vcgsoftware.com + link: question

The site is for a staffing software company. We currently have a few #2-5 listings on MSN, but are seriously lacking as far as our targetted keywords for pretty much all other engines. Are targetted keywords are staffing software, and recruiting software.

I've done link:www.vcgsoftware.com searches on Google, and get no results, but then do a search for just the domain and there are a lot of people with links to us, which ultimately confuses the mess out of me.

I guess the focus of what I'm hoping to find is in SEO purposes, as everyone here is pretty happy w/ the design aspects.

Thanks

Ok, to answer your question. When you do a link:www.yoursite.com, Google shows 0 results because you have no backlinks that have been indexed by Google.

When you do a regular search for your domain name, you're saying you get many results... The reason for this is because Google is searching for the "text" containing your url only. There is a BIG difference between text containing your url and your actual URL enclosed in an href link tag. Make sense? Google won't count your link unless it's actually a link, and is not just text containing your domain name.

It does make sense, but the first results all have anchor tags linked to us.

http://www.recruitersnetwork.com/software/staffing.htm

The only thing common on all of these that might make what your saying more valid is the fact that they are all in the format of <a href=http://vcgsoftware.com>www.vcgsoftware.com</a>. Is that what you mean by not being a backlink and just being a text link, in the forethought that if they change the text between the anchor tags it will then count as a link.

I also noticed a lot of our competetion on the same listing even comes up with a number of hits within their own site, I also did this, almost in a near duplicate manner except relating more to our content, and still nothing. Google is a beast, and it would be great but in all honesty if I can get top 5 on some of the other engines than I wouldn't really care to much about Google, AdSense can always pick up where its logic gets crazy.
