Hello,

I have been lurking in the SEO Chat forums for months and have learned an incredible amount about search engine marketing. Over the past several months I've been working on optimizing a client's site http://www.glidemagazine.com/. It's a deep, dynamic site with over 3,000 pages of content and has performed well for some time in generating lots of search engine referrals.

However, I have been struggling to improve the position of one of my pages - http://www.glidemagazine.com/downloads.php for the keyword phrase "free music downloads". I am currently #86 and have floated in and out of the top 100 for months but I have never come close to cracking the top 30 - which is my goal. I realize that it's a very competitive phrase and I have worked on trying to get backlinks - which I know is one area where I can improve. But other than increase the number of backlinks, I am at a lost for what I can do to improve my ranking.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I taken a look at the site and can't really see anything to change that would help. You have a PageRank of 5/10 and improving that will help with such a competitive key phrase. The more backlinks you can get on sites PR5 and above will help raise your profile. Sorry I can' be more helpful. Good luck.

thats a very competitive keyphrase...6.5M.
looks like you are at about no. 85 or so.
first page...for me....i view 100 at at time.

i would make sure to have internal link(s) using the "free music downloads" keyword phrase as the anchor text. right now , looks like you only have "downloads". also, when you acquire external backlinks, make sure they not only include the kw phrase, but also point directly to the page, rather than to the home page. don't know how much good it will do with such competition, but its worth a try.

ur website is not yet in DMOZ...
How about putting lyrics of the songs?

Instead of just targetting the broad term free music downloads do also target by individual artist and song..
how about free mp3 music downloads? this phrase is also searched a lot .....

In download_archives.php give link from the artist names also..

Since downloads24.html is concerned with Uncle Tupelo put that in heading as well as Title.

Don't forget to check out the free music downloads archive.

Below the list in downloads.php
I suggest putting
Pearl Jam
Uncle Tupelo
and ...more(download_archives.php)...

I've actually been trying to get into DMOZ for over 1 year now. The category I've submitted to had over 300 sites waiting for review as of last May and every month I check in with resource-zone.com and they tell me to keep waiting.

Adding the artist's name to the title and headings is definitely something that I'm considering.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the tips. I've gone from about 85 to 55 by implementing the on-page recommendations from the post. And I secured a couple of quality backlinks that will hopefully help me out some more when the next update comes around.

I really appreciate your suggestions!!

U an still improve ur position by putting more pages:
artists bio, song lyrics...

this will improve ur internal linking as well as ranking for some more relevant keywords ....
