Wordtracker info on how many times the keyword was searched

Where would company like Wordtracker get information on how many times a particular search term was searched on a search engine?
I have read somewhere that they get this data form MetaCrawler and DogPile search engines. Knowing the company who owns those search engines, its highly unlikely that Wordtracker had purchased or licensing the data from them.
