EXPERIENCE!

Though on a much serious note, and being no expert, i generally prefer Google Adwords Keyword Suggestion Tool.

wordtracker and google adwords tool both

Google adwords suggestion tool gives the best possible range of keywords related to your website. But if you also need a rough idea of no. of searches for a particular keyword then you should check them at wordtracker also. I usually start with google, make a list of keywords there. Then check wordtracker for the no. of searches for them.

I prefer Google Adwords. Keywordcountry is a good tool if you are looking for the top paying keywords for adsense.

I found a program called Rank Tracker that I've been using. It not only gives you suggestions on keywords but also provides KEI and tracks your keywords in the SE's. If you purchase the software, you can keep a history and show whether your keyword drops or falls in the SERP's.

Aaron Wall's Keyword Suggestion tool works pretty well. It brings a lot of other tools together on one screen.

Based on experience:

a. Generating keyword ideas- Google adwords external tool
b. Estimating traffic- Google traffic estimator.

You may find it uncomfortable to use. But those above tools generates a lot revenue to our site.

I have never used any keyword tools...
Just due to the fact that the most competitive terms are those who bring in the most amount of traffic.

So if you want traffic go for the top words or target lesser terms and be happy just to see your site top up on google without much benefit.
