Egol, SEO_AM, fathom, incdeveloper, MaxM, pteam, raz and anyone else I'm forgetting, as well as the other members...This is one of the simplest and best tools I've found so far.
http://www.mylongtail.com I'm using it for the low-hanging fruit. Seriously guys, its worth adding this bit of code to your header. Here the 411 on it: The long tail is an economic concept that says the collective demand for less-popular items (in green) can exceed the all the most popular added together (in red). Online music stores are a perfect example because they can carry large collections of music just as easily as just a small selection. The product is digital and there are no inventory issues. So, the pay-per-click industry is now using this concept to encourage you to run ever-larger keyword buys. Their inventory of obscure, yet valuable keywords is inexhaustible. But the dirty secret of keyword marketing is that the longtail concept applies even better to un-paid search, and can eventually free you from your paid keyword campaigns. *EDIT: It's Monday afternoon here in London, our biggest day, and the 1st Monday since implementing changes to the 50,000 kw's I manage on adwords. After the implementation of the information gathered using this tool, I have to re-emphasize that this is an incredible tool for those of you needing traffic at minimum bids, or on the other end, like I am, having a plentiful budget and looking to also dominate the minute market. I'm seeing, LIVE, search terms that I haven't found on ANY kw tool, wordtracker, or my own common sense. Don't worry about the "Your hit tail"tab, use the next one, the "Search Hits" tab, then sit back and watch in real-time what your visitors searched, and where they searched, to get to you. It even goes as far as to tell you how many pages they ended up sorting through. *just felt that this needed an update Last edited by GaryTheScubaGuy : June 19th, 2006 at 09:06 AM. Reason: once again, as always, I can't type...or spell..or remeber to hit the damn spell checker!!! |

I will have to take a closer look. Longtail posted here for a review and I took a quick look. At that time it appeared to be a take off of Google analytics as far as what could be mined from the data. It is getting good backing from dazzlindonna and others. Now that it is murch more refined, I hold my judgement until I review it once again.

In my market, which is very competitive, having instant access to real time search results that refresh every 10 sec, versus google which seems to run a day behind, is invaluable. I also see many 5,6,and 7 kw terms that wordtracker, google sugeest and overture never return.

One more thing The tool allows you to monitor the search terms that bring people to your site in real time.
Edit: NP Egol, I don't really look for that anymore like I did a couple years ago. The comment alone outweighs any amount of points. Thanks again. Last edited by GaryTheScubaGuy : June 18th, 2006 at 02:16 PM. |

Lol, you da man Ditzy! Hey, with that kind of power, how about telepathically contacting google and tell them to share a few secrets? Of course that would take all the fun out of it, and that's why I do it...oh the heck with it, give them a ring for me Thanks again |

My comments:
1. If you're in a highly unique field/niche is there really a longtail pertaining to additional keywords? Me thinks not, there would be a different skew to that curve where the majority of the keywords are in fact in the red. 2. What is the criteria used to determine what keywords hit the longtail? Basically I'm asking what % is used to determine interval level -- what is the optimum percentage that dictates longtail keywords and non. I'm guessing this % changes frequently making optimization harder (if longtail keywords change). Depending where you place your 'red vs. green' marker will dictate whether or not the green actually exceeds red in traffic. This value to me soudns as subjective as industries. 3. Given results of the 'longtail' would you not then have to increase your content by X amount to capture this market and get the same amount of traffic as red? Increasing by whatever the longtail percentage is in order to capture that market all (or some) of the long tail words. Just some minor comments, I'm not completly familiar with the tool.

djstreet, I get a lot of visitors that come to my main site through really strange phrases, so I am hoping that this will help me increase those.
My sites are all niche sites and I just installed the script in a small secondary site. As it happens I was planing on increasing the number of pages in that site by about 10 new 450 word pages (related information) so I'll give this thing a shot and see how it goes. raz

Keywords, I am not so sure, but I will most certainly keep you updated with the progress... There is only one way to do this, and that is to experiment. However the key is that you can't really target every low hanging keywords and make a page for every one, which is a BH technique that works for them but will not work for White Hat site. It will be very difficult to keep building pages for all those keywords without degrading the quality of the website. I think my approach is going to be targeting the low hanging keywords that can be combined into a single key phrase very conservatively and use the remainder of the keywords in a couple of related blogs... Just thinking and writing. I'll just have to wait and see how the system works, how to apply it, without degrading the website, and what the out come will be... It will take a little time. raz raz |

Nice, i had use this alternative keywords once in a very competive word, i think i had once told tstolber or fathon i cant really remember well, that i used my main keywords as the base of the name of my url, but i variate it a little, for example my main keyword is costa rica, well i will exchanging links using costa rica as main keyword and some extras: costa rica adventures, costa rica rafting, costa rica hotels, ect... this way i can rank costa rica which is the strong keyword secondary because is too big and the alternative keywords can get me alot of traffic because they are very especific and thats traffic i win....
BTW damm this tool is very nice, i need to really get in it... but what i had seen is very interesting point of view... no too many people use to make SEO for alot of keywords, almost all the newbies use to try to rank one keyword, even if it is: poker or gambling... hahaa....
