I think the way to get this information is using DNS info history lookup. Some services provide the age of domain and previous registrations, i would assume the script would crawl that...

Can someone tell me what is the point to research/purchase a domain that was already registered once and now expired. Is it hoping that you might get some traffic from the previous customer base?

Thank you

As far as I know there are lots of scripts thatdo this, but I believe a number of them if not all of them have an agreement of some sort with registrars or the whois database to get the information.

If you are an Executive account holder with godaddy you can get their expired domains and expiring domains sent to you daily...

One problem about trying to create your own script is you are competing with lots of other companies that buy at 12:01:01 the second the domain expires i.e. pool.com, justdropped.com, domdat.com etc.

The reason people buy them is for resale (either back to previous owner who mistakingly forgot to renew, or to new buyer), or for traffic, or for PR, or age of domain.

How i check on the age of a domain is with archive.org. A domain that is 10 years old is only valuable if it was INDEXED with content 10 years ago. A domain that never had a site up that is 10 years old isn't worth anything until the day is was indexed IMO.
