Smile PHP 301 redirect assistance

Hi all,

I have a quick question relating to PHP 301 redirect. Basically we have a website which ranks very in Google. This site has just been redesigned, with new content and a smaller number of pages.

We are going to leave the old site in the base directory, and put the new site in /a/

When adding PHP 301 redirect to the pages of the old site, do they all need to be redirected to their counterpart in the new site, or can we just redirect all to the new index page?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Scott

It would be preferable to redirect them to their new equivalents wherever possible, that way you're saying to the SEs (and users) "this page has moved to here".

Any remaining pages which don't have an equivalent new version can then be redirected to the new homepage, or given a custom 404 error page.

Hi,

I don't agree with your tactic.

If the web site ranks very well, only change what needs to be changed.

Why would you do that ? I would put the new site where the old site was and keep as many page names unchanged as possible. For the page names that I cannot keep or that need to be removed, I would redirect (301) to a new page with a similar subject.

A page by page redirect is much better than a redirect of everything to your home page. Think to your visitors who bookmarked a given page within your web site.

JagNet agrees: not having to redirect in the first place would certainly be preferable
