I am not familiar with developing sites from scratch. All of my business is designing and marketing template based sites.
I have been approached by my husbands boss asking me to design a new site so that they can embed a microsite that requires the support of either php, asp or Coldfusion. Can you tell me exactly what that means? Also... can this type of embedding be done with an html driven site? Would the site have to be designed in a particular program that supports html and the other formats? Like I said... all of this is really foreign to me. I am trying to come up with some type of solution for them and determine whether or not I am capable of helping them. Thanks in advance, Mel |

You are best to be honest with your husband's boss and tell him/her that you don't have the necessary experience... it is extremely unlikely you will be able to "crash course" this let alone learn just by asking for informal advice. A bad outcome to a perceive level of professional competence can negatively affect your husband's tender in the company.

Yeah... I totally agree! Taking on this project would not be in the best intrest of anyone.
I just needed to know if it is doable. If it is... I can tell them they can integrate it in their current html site. Do you do this type of work? Mel |

I'm a little confused on what you're asking... are you wanting to include server side scripting (asp, php, cf) in existing html pages or are you wanting to add a seperate "microsite" within a site written primarily in html?
Any template driven site can be used with dynamic scripting languages. I think I'm missing it.

The one that I am asking about is not a templated site. I personally work on templated sites. |

I'm a little confused on microsite.... Is it mysite.com/micorsite/ (a directory or subdomain of related pages)? Or do you intend that there would be a "mini site" (meaning small) as part of an existing html page in like an Iframe?
Sorry for any confusion, I'm just not familiar with the term. |

1. Ensure the server-side scripts are installed php 4, MySQL (or SQL for Windows) and sometimes Zend Optimizer. 2. Install a WYSIWYG on your desktop that can display php 3. Design the website 4. Load to account [add to it's own section/directory] and add links to it on the existing website. Assuming you wish to actually load the php site into/onto an HTML page you can use an iFrame sized appropriately. 5. install a database and configure. That's it. It's all easy stuff "IF" you have php experience [or some other dynamic language to draw on]. However, as I noted earlier - you just can't jump from static HTML into php without a learning curve... normally it takes weeks/months for most people with formal coursing. There are very few extremely intuitive html ONLY designers that can pick it up "just like that". Last edited by fathom : April 11th, 2007 at 05:23 PM. |
