Yet another Seo Professional Request
Yes, this is yet another request for help with promoting my site. I have already tried several seo companies - but up to now, I don't think I've chosen too wisely. The results have been poor. So I'm a little wary about this - I think it's fair to say, these are shark infested waters. I need a lot of reassurance!
I think part of my problem is, I have a limited budget. Up until now, I've been splitting my costs between Google PPC and SEO work. I now intend to divert all of my budget towards SEO work - which hopefully gives me a decent monthly budget for this. You'll find the URL of my site in my profile, but searching Google for webcottages should also find it. The site is completely dynamic and maintained by me. I'll want to keep it that way, so I'm looking for someone that's happy to tell me alterations that are needed rather than insisting they have ftp access. As for results? Well everybody wants instant results, but realistically I need to see some improvement by the end of 2007. January is an important month for business. I really need to get my site into the top 10 for 2 or 3 key phrases and an increase in my Google PR would also be helpful. It's currently 4 (Yes, I know PR is meaningless, but many of my customers judge sites by their PR). Finally, one thing that I've found frustrating in the past is using companies that provide no feedback as to what they're doing. I'm not looking for detailed feedback so that I can steal your business, but I do want to know you're actually doing something. So some sort of real feedback from time-to-time (not just access to an automated link counter). There's nothing more frustrating than contacting your seo company to say the results look poor only to hear - "oh yes, they don't look good - I'll investigate" - I'm looking for something more pro-active than this. Sorry, I've read this back and it all sounds a little harsh, but I've been bitten so many times - I need to get it right this time! Please PM me, but remember to include an email address so I can contact you back. Links to sites you've worked with as proof of some track record would also be good. |

sent you a PM with my email, our company site, and some press about results we have achieved. Not sure if my company can help, but would be more than willing to talk.

The bottom line are the results obtained and the track record of the SEO company. Wish you good luck in your selection.

Not touting for the job -- just some free advice for your onpage SEO:
Title tags: some of them are so long I ran out of room in the browser! The titles also contain the same text at the beginning on every page that I looked at, and some even duplicated the phrase in the one title. H1 and H2: again, duplicated throughout the site, so the benefit of these tags is more or less wasted. Keyword stuffing: I lost count of the number of times "self catering" appeared on the homepage. Code bloat: Increased use of CSS required, for example the use of the star.gif icon can be CSS based. Anyway you can place the availablility calendar in an iframe or pull it in using ajax. That's a lot of code for 0 SEO benefit. Meta keywords: just get rid of it <head> section javascript: put the Google Analytics code at the end of the page and place the openWindow() javascript function in an external file. Sitewide external link: do you really need to link to freshbreaks.co.uk from every page? freshbreaks will be getting little or no value from a sitewide link - nofollow it for every page other than the homepage, or even better make it a link on the homepage, but just a text reference on the others. Duplicate links: no point having so many links to your "search" and "specials" pages on the homepage. Nofollow the duplicates and help focus the link juice to unique pages. Also dump the use of the <strong> tags for these. Just use a CSS class to make them bold. It looks as though there's been a lot of effort with the onpage SEO for the keyword "webcottages", but is that really what people will be using as a search query to find you? And it's your own name - competition for that isn't going to be high!! |

Wow - thanks to everyone who responded. Thanks to JagNet and the others that offered free advice - just in the interest of helping me out! My faith in the industry has been greatly restored by this. I've already made a few alterations to my site and hope to carry out a few more before the end of the week.
I also hope to make a decision on which company I'll use to help me soon and will be reponding to all the PM's and other messages I've recieved. I'll also be spending more time hanging around here in the hope I'll learn some more. Thanks to everyone once again. |

A lot of that free advice can be found in some intro to SEO guides. If you develop the site yourself and just need to know the ins and outs of how to see some improvement on your site, I would recommend just reading something like the beginners guide to SEO that Rand put together over on SEOmoz. (http://www.seomoz.org/articles)
Just read some of the basic tips and you will see a noticeable improvement already. It doesn't look like you are really looking for hardcore link baiting and off page SEO practices anyway (at least budget-wise, that likely wouldn't make sense). What you need is probably something you can do yourself, quite honestly, maybe with a little direction. I wish I worked more with people that didn't want to give FTP access. I would much rather prefer telling people what they need to do and letting them do it. |
