Windows 7 - a review available?
Hi all...
thought I'd ask this here, as I do have a memory that one of us here, commented a few months back that they were trying out Win7....
is there a 'definitive' answer as to how that trial worked out?
I ask - sigh -as I'm in the process of buying new boxes for the office and XP - as stable and as loved as it is here for a prod OS - is not going to be available...
so...is Win7 okay? oh, and how far away is SP1 too?
Jim

I've been running it since my Vista laptop crashed about two months ago, and haven't had a single problem out of it (once I downloaded and installed all the right drivers - my printer, router, hubs, mouse, and external drives all came with disks that weren't supported by Win7).
It runs much, much faster than did Vista, and the new taskbar is much, much easier to work with (uses icons instead of titles for the tabs, not sure if you'd seen that yet).
I'm running the 64-bit Home version on an Intel i5 processor (2.27 GHz) with 8 GB memory.

I love it... Not a single problem. My intertnet download time sped up so much from vista I am now getting an average of 500 to 2200kbps when downloading movies on bit comet.
Havn't had any problems at all

I have not had any problems with windows 7, but make sure all of your hardware is supported by this new OS. As you probably know drivers are all plug and play now which automatically gets the latest drivers for your hardware, as long as you’re connected to the internet. I would still make sure that all of your hardware is supported by win7 before installing it.
Windows 7 has a XP mode which means that if you have any software that only works with XP, then Win7 can support that as well.
SP1 is in its beta stage at the moment so should be released soon.
I work in a family computer shop, and installing operating systems is part of my sad life.
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit is the top of the range OS but is only useful if you have a 64 bit processor otherwise I would just go for the 32 bit edition.

The change was noticable from the day I upgraded to windows 7. ie before upgrade I was getting a max of 400KBPS as soon as I upgraded I was getting over 1000KBPS (Same movie being downloaded). This was IMO definatley associated with windows 7 handeling the internet connection (or something else) much much better.
Also before upgrade my browser sometimes would lock up when I had multiple pages open. After upgrade never happens.
Same with games I used to get computer sometimes locking while playing games with vista after upgrade never happens.

Have to agree with everyone else, Windows 7 is the OS that Microsoft finally got right. Used 64bit Home premium since it was launched (I bought a new desktop at the same time) and it's been really good.. though it's a high spec machine (12GB RAM) so can't comment on what it would be like with less resources
