Why would a really good SEO sell itself?

I was thinking ... let's say I'm really good SEO. Why would I sell my services to somebody else.

If I'm really good SEO, I would work on my websites, not somebody else's, right?

    Or maybe I'm missing something?

I'm really good at installing and programming business telephone systems.
I only work and program my own system...why would I work on others?

Having a shop front is pretty useless if you have nothing inside to sell...

Good SEO is a lot more effective if you have a great product to sell...

That is the whole point. If I'm a really good SEO I would make much more money on my own websites, than working on somebody else's.

There are so many great products to sell. If I'm really good SEO I would be able to pick any product/service, bring buyers to the site and sell like crazy, right?

LOL Your talking about someone who's ambitious..been there done that..I usta do just that...way too much work for me...and you only get a percentage of the cost~v~product...I can now get 100 percent of my product...it's just sittin in my head and comes out my fingers. What would you do?

I think I know what your thinkin though...Build sites that bring in adsense, link sales, advertising, seo them to the top of the serps and end up Rickie Rich. Been there done that too...that market is way too spammy for my taste.

Let's say you are a master stock broker. You worked for others for 10 years, and you saved half mil.

Would you keep working for others and make ... 1 mil in 2 years, or would you 20 fold your half mil to 10 mil in 2 years?

It comes down to risk and drive. Being an entrepreneur carries all the risk and requires that that individual have a vision and continually work towards realization of that vision...

On the other hand, most all people just want to survive and become successful working for others. Little risk is involved. Most are followers... there are very few true leaders. Those followers work to live NOT live to work.

4 months includes reading (learning) as well. SEO_AM I wonder what is your reading vs. typing ratio?

    • relaxzoolander → disagrees: SEO_AM...reading? i think you might have miscalculated SEO_AMs gray matter vs. skull thickness ratio.

Lici... You do not have to come to my defense. Relaxzoolander is a total asinine jerk that has no idea who his father is. However, he is one of the best combined web designer + SEOs around. He does it all. I usually cut him a little slack PRIMARILY because he was my first SEO teacher here at SEO Chat. He is good, or at least he used to be. If he sticks around we will have to find out if he still knows anything. I doubt it though because he is quite hard headed.

I ran my own business managing my own properties and taking some clients for a number of years. I started the business because I love SEO and I was making good money but the more it grew the less time I had to do it.

I accepted a position as Director of SEO for a small firm. We have tripled in size since I started, I make more money, I only have to be at the office 10-12 hours a day (instead of 16), and I learned the true meaning of:

A man that loves what he does never has to work a day in his life.

    • SEO_AM → agrees: On average a person makes more working for others than when working for him/her self.
    • Test-ok → agrees: I hear that...it makes beer time a lot more fun.

I worked (non SEO related job) for a company for 5 years, and they overworked me and underpay me.

Then I started to work in the same field for myself, and I overworked myself (it became a habit I guess), but the pay increased about 50%.

After overworking myself for a couple of years I got to my senses, organized everything, and now I have life again, and my pay is about 90% better than when I worked for a company.

Unless I'm forced, I would never work for a company (other than my own) again.

Kinda did the same thing..worked for myself since about 82...at that time I was in the same boat. And after you gain the experience that statement above "I worked for a company for 5 years, and they overworked me and underpay me." will read more like....I now work for a company and I hardly do anything and they pay me well.
