my statement has nothing to do with texans.

i wont stand by and be silent when someone makes unfounded and unnecessary comments about something they obviously no nothing about and only have some biased point to make. for what purpose? i got no idea.

It’s easy to say there are a lot of valleys around when you are standing on top of a hill. Maybe the reason for all the anger in this thread. I don't like anger. :-(

I’m an accessible web designer. I like good SEOs. Really good SEO has a lot in common with really good accessibility. Everybody is happy.

It’s true there are a lot of bad web designers around. I don’t like them at all. Far too much about flash :-( and ‘style’, not enough about content and what the site was supposed to achieve in the first place. It doesn’t help that many businesses don’t realise that SEO is required at all – they think a website will do the job by itself. I should imagine bad designers could feel quite threatened by SEOs who approach a site from the content and accessibility point of view.

But you can’t brush all web designers with the same paint. I’ve been taking a sneaky look at sites of designers that contribute to this site – there are some good designers here. There are probably one or two decent ones elsewhere as well.

Oh, I don’t like bad SEOs. They are responsible for a whole lot of the clutter on the web that gets in the way of finding useful things. :-(

The assumption that Web designers hate SEO's sounds so general. I think what is important here is that you need to understand human pshycology. What do you need to be able to do to become an SEO specialist? In my case I know programming, web programming and web design from a career starting in '96. You also need to have a understanding of general marketing techniques and surely you need to think further than the plannet you are on.

Web designers that feel threatened by us feel treatened because of low confidence in their own talent and because they are feeling insecure on their level of knowledge in comparison to ours, it can also be because they do not understand what we do.

In my case I have to cope with really bad web designers that started playing around with Frontpage a few weeks ago and now regard themselves as web designers. These guys normally are very excepting for advice and leadership from an SEO. Then you get the guy that has been doing web design for a few months or even longer that THINKS he knows everything. These guys ussually feel threatened BIG time, and will attack you around every corner.

Very important though is that web designers that has walked the road will try to protect their cuustomers from the dangers of the afore mentioned web designers. This is good to as it should protect the customer as the customer in most cases knows very little and can easily be exploited.

You must remember one thing though. When a cutomer approaches you for this job NEVER TEAR APPART THE EXISTING WEB DESIGN. This is important. Also ask for a private meeting with the web designer and descuss in detail what you are going to do with HIS design and why! It is good to school him a little on the on-page factors in such a way that he understands that you know what you are doing and wnat too accomplish.

If you get a negetaive response from a designer that you treat with respect one of you have a PROBLEM! Make sure it's not you. In general most web designers feel treatened, swap this feeling to team work if you can. You would have felt the same in his possition.

I am experiencing the exact same thing at the moment. I am responsible for SEO while 2 other web designers are supposed to design the websites. Every little thing I ask to be done will cost me at least a week of head aches as these web designers dissagree and refuse to accept advice I give. I went to the site owners and stated that I had enough either they give me freehand on these site designs or I'm going. This erupted into a huge discussion and at the moment I am in full control of any changes to websites.

Relaxzoolander do not misunderstand me. A web designer are graded in different levels. I feel though that a true web designer must have knowledge of SEO or else be open to the advice form a professional SEO. The reality is web designers feel threatened the moment an SEO walks into the project. What I am trying to convey is that SEO's should understand why and place themselves into the web designers shoes as most of us are web designers anyway!
