creating a streategy where you put timelines on your goals makes sense, they are mesaurable in that sense. But no right-minded SEO person will help you if you MUST hit a goal within time constraints. I won't risk losing contract work b/c of unrealistic goal setting.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for correct streatgy implementation, but time frames can be difficult.

The goals to be met are very important to us and I would believe to any sane project manager. The use of timelines is a utility so that we are able to assess the overall project. Dealing with project management, timelines do slip...but when they slip, then it sets a warning of possible escalation or change in strategy. Our overall goal is to reach what we wanted to in a reasonable adequate amount of time. Even with SEO/SEM timeline can be measured...a good SEO/SEM consultant will know if certain goals can be reached in weeks, months, quarters, or years. |

Cost appreciation: 5K/day [to achieve goal without penalty] x 365 = 1,825,000 visitors. Let's assume this is a PPC campaign with a ridiculously low cost of $0.05/click that's of $91,250.00. I say this because 5K/day visitation doesn't occur out of thin air. As PPC at that level of activity likely cost more by a factor of X10 -- the minimum is a good bet. Let's assume that you don't have any way or ability to generate fresh new content thus the SEO must do this at about 2-5 new pages per day say an average cost of $25/page... or about $40,000 over a year. Let's assume that you don't have any way or ability to generate links of quality to support that fresh new content... that cannot be reciprocal links or PR text links, forum sigs, comment spam and other garbage links that will not assist your definfitive goals of 5K/day visitation in a fix period of time. I would average this at about 5 links per day some at low cost $10, some at high $400 and everything in between but noting that the previous 'quality constrains apply'... so about $40,000K. This naturally assumes I ain't got a clue yet about the attempted project genre, targeted markets, industry competitiveness, or what your firm will actually invest into assisting your own fruition... So let's tact on another $50,000 for incidentals. Opening costs: $221,250.00 That's a minimum for first year. Note: profit margin per unit assuming a below average 1% conversion x say $50 margin is about $1 million at that level and "likely" self-sustaining activity can be achieved for a fraction of the costs of the first year. Fathom,
I'm trying to be as serious as cancer when I say this and I don't mean to disrepect you...but you have to be joking me if you want me to believe this is the type of jargon you talk to all your clients. You are the experts in your field. You believe in SEO because you know it can work. There are many...many sites that do attain and maintain a 5K per day ratio. Is the below meant to be a cost estimate if I used other means besides SEO? To tell you the truth, I believe in SEO and I believe in you. I know you can do better than this. I'm challenging all of you experts to help me here. Together we can build a long term relationship and friendship. Now can we get to business? - Gorilla_Bob Quote:

Do you want ANY traffic or do you want traffic that is from specific keywords? If any visitor will do then I can give you a lower price. But if you want qualified traffic then that costs a lot more. (there are a lot of niches out there that will not yield that volume of traffic in total so you might be asking for the impossible)
You said that you wanted the best... proven strategy... key milestones... marked with goals... specific amount of time... unique visitors... proven track record... online when you demand. You are talking PREMIUM... he gave you a five cent price.

The user quoted a conservative estimate IMO. I am fully aware of the imporatnce of having measurable goals within an SEO plan, however, time constraints on organic rankings for quality keywords make for a very hard project.
Furthermore, if you are readily changing your strategies essentially saying, "your business strategy is as dynamic as the problems you encounter" then I would question your firms undersatnding of what a strategy is in the first place. |

Absolutely we will change our strategy if it is not working. That is the key of having milestones. To be able to gauge success of the current strategy. If the strategy is failing, then one must change it. So I have to disagree with you entirely on that point. To continue with a strategy that does not work would be a waste of time for both the consultant and the client.
The industry that we would like to pierce is "Online Poker". I'm not sure how difficult this would be, but I do know that there are about 300K-400K searches per month for just that keyword alone. What are your thoughts? Quote:

I attempted to cover a volume of industries. Having worked with, talked to, many poker owners [some here] my price is underestimated. The simple fact is the top players deploy extremely dirty tricks [cover later] You cannot really trade or buy links now and even finding websites out of the current "PR text link circles" many websites of noble value will not have poker links on their websites. On the content side - you can write all the rules, tips, tricks, famous players bios, you want will not help much since quality links are the problem and the "authorities" are your competitors therefore you gain little ground... the only thing you can do is establish yourself as an authority [say in Gamblers Anonymous, Gambler's School, or something not directly associated with the commercial aspect] -- which will take years to establish a level of authority. Your top existing competitors Quote:
1. hire newbie SEOs on commission - 50% of take - they have 90 days to develop a website. What the newbies don't know is that cloaking technology is being used to serve up a copy of the optimized website to browser users while the SEO services the version for the search engines. The owner keeps 100% of whatever the take is, owns a generally new 'uniquely' developed website complete with content and links [FOR FREE], and goes on to the next newbie... all the while enhancing their network of more, and more, and more websites. This strategy costs "nothing" unfortunately you must be scum to use it. I wish you the best but I believe your goals are unrealistic and not achievable short of 2-3 years in this industry and alot more than you are willing to pay. You may wish to consider 'black hat SEO' - unfortunately I am only a few months from retirement and intend enjoying lots of free time here - rather then arguing with clients. EGOL is right when he asks / says what traffic do you want.
This is why SEO on a pay for performance basis (something I have considered several times) can't really work well. It is possible to generate lots and lots of traffic but if it is not targetted all its doing is wasting bandwidth. A proper SEO will get you targetted traffic the will have a decent conversion ratio (assuming your site is good). Online poker is a really tough nut to crack and I wouldn't take it on unless there was a serious cash incentive with a dedicated team of people with a decent sized budget. Its just too high risk. I don't take on jobs that I can't be 100% confident in. What you would probably be better off with is some consultation and some initial SEO help so you can implement the strategy your self. Doing some keyword research will find some less competetive poker related terms that will get higher traffic. For example, targetting omaha online poker and online texas holdem rather than online poker may help although as I said - its a very competetive market.

I currently SEO for a company and we get between 5-6k per day. I am an independent that quit my 9-5 to take over this position. My previuos employer was getting 50k visitors per day. I tell you this because the marketing techniques, although different, are closely related. Here's a breakdown;
30% PPC Campaigns 20% organic (banners, text) 35% affiliate generated traffic 15% collecting emails from all of the above and running an email campaign that runs 24/7 via their own servers. Fathom is correct in his bidding, at least within 10% Just for the software, hardware, marketing campaigns (i.e. CommissionJunction $5k startup), the accounting, IT and other neccessary staff you'll spend much of that incidental budget. Without alot of research and knowing your spend, competiton, and many other factors, don't expect a realistic bid. If you get one, expect the cost to go over 20-40% I reccomend you get an evaluation from and perspective SEO/SEO Company (a good, realistic bid will probably cost you $500). Otherwise you will be throwing good money after bad. |

Pertainig to strategy, a firm will change their strategy, however, not as a result of problems encountered or you 'll face new strategies every year.
Coherent and proper business strategies exploit your distinct position and/or capabilities of your firm. SEO has enabled any website, given the time, to compete at the distinct position level by ranking with the big boys. If you are always changing your strategy this suggests you do not understand what you're capabilities/positioning is in the first place. Your TACTICS on how you meet your strategy may be changed and re-visited monthly if you want, but a new strategy? Set yourself apart by looking at paragraph two and finding something distinct. In online poker you'll have to think a while. |
