I got many domains, so I want for a long relation.

$40 budget. Hmmm... maybe a top SEO could do SEO on 40 sites for 40 keywords for 40 months. That fit your massive budget of $40? (just kidding of course)

All kidding aside... you will get almost nothing done for $40 except maybe a little bit of social bookmarking or some almost worthless backlinks over at digital point.

hmm....$40/hour??

Coz I just can't assume anybody willing to buy SEO advice or consultation for $40

well....I have got until $60, full SEO until I get good ranks in google.
My keywords arent that highly competitive !

I have a feeling that wasn't a typo, a 'K' was not left out accidentally, you are serious that your budget cannot exceed $40...

I can offer you almost a half an hour of consultation for that price... but lets be honest here, your wasting your time, get a real job or learn seo yourself... your going nowheres on $40.

I don't think that you are serious enough for your site....had you been serious you would have invited SEO quotations for your site and then would have chosen the right person that has the knowledge and ability to optimize your site yet quoting a price that fits your budget.

I for one, can make a basic report on the changes required for your site to be SE friendly for $40. It would be better for you to spend some time reading the basics of SEO and trying to do it yourself...that way you will save $40 for each of your upcoming SEO projects, that you can use to create content or do some designing changes for your site.

IMHO, you have only heard the word SEO but aren't aware of it in terms of effort that goes in or the importance of it in marketing and promoting your site.

After all....SEO is not an option..it is a necessity!!

It depends on the competaiveness of the term/market you are trying to capture. But some general information that may help you.

SEOs charge between around $50ph to about $300 ph.

It would normally be considered appropiate to invest around $1000 or so in targetted directory listings.

It costs about $8 to $12 for a link building comapny to devlop you theemed backlinks if you are buying in groups of about 50 minimum. These links are typically pr 3,4,5 links on themed sites link pages. probably need at least a 100 or so to notice much of an effect (depending on competativness of term)

The biggest cost is for content creation. This is what can get you oneway organic links. Copywriters can be from starting price of $20 per 500 words to over $100. getting people to devlop you applications that make decent link bait can also be from relativley cheap (couple of hundred dollars) to thoushands of dollards. (For example an application we are getting wriiten is costing us about 2500 euros).

The overall price to capture a market is roughly somehwere between about $5,000 to $50,000 depending on the term/market.

Please note these are just rough guides and approximations i am sure many others will disagree with me about them. Just trying to give you some general guide lines.

You $40 will not be of any real use. If you really want to spend it on your site than i would advise a few targetted, relevant PPI (pay per inclsuin) directories.

If you wish say $10K/month income - the suggested cost of SEO is $1000 (that's an attractive 10%)...

So your $40 suggests you have no intentions of making more than $400/month -- and I find that hard to believe.

You got to get serious about marketing online or ignore it...

Most solutions "LESS THAN $1000" are not likely worth your time.

What would one do to make money online? 99% of the sites I visit are free, where does the money come from?

The easiest answer is that the sites make money from advertisers.

But you do raise an interesting point. I would think the difference is that people who put up a not for profit site donot spend money trying to achieve the top position thus the achivement of good rankings is not that difficult as there is little serious competition. But as soon as there are players competing for a money making term then there is a willingness to invest money in capturing that position. As others are spending on these rankings this is where the competition gets harder and more expensive.

I have no idea as to the % of webpages which are there as some form of revenue generation compared to the % that are there not for revenue generation. But I would wager the most competative SERPs are for search terms that generate the either easiest or biggest revenue streams.
