I have only been doing this for about 8 months, luckily I had a couple of friends who taught me some of the ins and outs (and of course lurking here for months). I have been able to turn a profit from day one, a lot of that has to do with a having a sysadmin background. I have never seen a successful seo person that was solely working for someone else.

You will never make any real money working for anyone but yourself.

And currently I will be buying my wife a new set of boobs with this months take. They were her idea , not mine

I would say good SEO's have waken up already, that's why there are almost next to nil people available for jobs, and there are more then a dozen new jobs posted on monster and other SEO job websites.

SEO gets job.
SEO gets good.
SEO wakes up.
SEO works for self.

Supply and Demand is getting bad.

I took an SEO job for an online company due to needing a reason to leave the house. I do very well under affiliate programs and make twice as much as my old job as a programmer. I just cannot take the solitude of working at home.

When I took the job, I took it at the same programmer rate from my previous job. After 6mths of hard work, they were listed at the top of most natural searches and I cleaned up their PPC. I renegotiated and now find I am making almost double what is purported above.

Point being, take the job at the going rate. Work your tail off, and when you produce, renegotiate. They will be more than happy to keep you.

How much I like this statement I always wanted to be my own boss, work when I want but have enough money to live decently. I'm not there yet, but working hard for it and wishing it extremely hard.

Without going off the topic of SEO earnings too much, would anyone care to offer a benchmark as to the type of results a good SEO should achieve?

Obviously, top 3 for each keyword, but how quickly should this be achieved on the big 3 engines?

I'm wondering how legitimate SEO's and their clients agree timelines for results...
