Living in Mexico really sucks. I would love to get a job as a SEO and earn 40k a year... but here people don't know what a SEO even is. People use the net to chat and look for porn, nothing else.
So, I just focus on my own sites and try to get some experience, hoping that one day I will be able to find an opening for a related job. I love working on the net, and this would be a dream job for me. Payment wouldn't be so important, I would be happy to be able to work on what I love. |

I got a offer of 315.000 NOK/year (about 52500 US$) and I was thinking very hard about it for a while. They would let me do any outside consulting on my own time so it was impossible for me to accept the offer at that time.
It would be nice to work in a large organization some day.

lol...I couldn't give you any rep for this ... outstanding! I consider myself a sack of potato's. I hope soon to graduate to a bag of french fries and eventually end up at my local Mc Donalds. Maybe I'll get lucky and the hot chick across the street will get me in her order. ;) If you are truly good at SEO, as EGOL aptly describes from being an SEO to really doing SEO, You should have no trouble attaining 6 figures a year working on your own entities. When you account for taxes and cost of insurance one would think, based upon a 6 figure gross income, that 70k to 80K a year is a very fair salary. Much depends on what you are making on your own vs time invested compared to what it would cost you in terms of hours, office politics, freedom and net income. I would personally laugh at anyone that offered me 45K unless it was a 3 hour a day job and my commute consisted entirely of getting out of bed....I most certainly will eclipse that 45K just sleeping in the rest of the year.....I'm the guy EGOL says spends to much time bull****ting and I do take way to many smoke breaks (got my patches last week and just pumping myself up for the big dive to quit)....I almost had to blush EGOL then I realized ya didn't mention me beer. ;) In either case, there is no security except the "Tax Man Come'th" and the unemployment line awaits. You can always count on the security of knowing both will be there for you when you least expect it. ![]()

I'm an SEO for one of the big 3.
Hey all. I work for one of the big 3, meaning MSN, Yahoo, and Google. I've been doing it for over 3 years now, and as the market has grown, the job has changed dramatically. SEO's for the big 3, like private firms, now have heavy client interaction, and next/same day deadlines. I make about 60k a year. It ain't a bad gig, but honestly, considering the amount of money I see clients spend on proposals I write, my salary is fairly modest. I feel worth 70 -75k at least, but then again, who doesn't want more.
Hope that helps. |

romeo - Are you saying you work directly for Google, MSN or Yahoo! or that you do optimization work for clients at those 3 engines - I think that's what all of us do
Welcome to SEOChat, BTW! |

Yeah, I could see them doing that but I doubt they'd be posting then. We don't get much good info about The Algo from G Y or M G-Man

Don't you guys think for the most part their are very few actual positions that pay what a good seo would be worth?
My old resume site ranks for some consulting terms so once in while I get the oddball call looking for me to move to some state to help some company. I havn't updated the site in at least a year, mostly because I never thought it would be worth it to work for someone directly. |

I think salary will depend also on where the seo specialist came from. In our country $35K - $40K is already acceptable and also considered hign since we a poor country.

It is an interesting dilema.
SEO gets job. The only way I (rarely) do outside SEO is for a fee + percentage. Everyone wins.
