I don't agree. Some people just don't "get it". Some who do "get it" can't pull it off.

With my own sites I find that out of ten linkbait ideas that I think are "great", only a few will yield what I hope they will yield.... but sometimes a piece of content that I think is "pedestrian" will get more links that a carefully designed linkbait.

My conclusion is: linkbait development is not a sure thing. It is risky - but it is still the best way to get high quality links.

I'm constantly surprised by some of my pages that get backlinked. Often not the linkbait whatsoever. In some cases it's a random result of social bookmarking when someone books the last page they're on regardless of the content. Some of my sites get links back because of the quality of content overall, but that ends up in home page links, not deep links. I'll take 'em where I get 'em, but I think link building is the hardest part of SEO and if your products are of high enough value that you can show the ROI, it's worth getting an expert.
