I won't agree on letting others decide on my career, of course you can seek their advice and the last decision should come from you. All the best to find your destiny asap.

It's hard to differentiate two different (?) area of expertize, especially when your one option is SEO.

As a starter, you might have found SEO is all about building Links - i hate - and subbmitions. My career also started with that, but after sometimes I find it more and more fun experiences, on each new tips I learned. It's all about experience here in SEO, no defined parameters and it all upto you and how you think. If you are well-versed in HTML/CSS/PHP/JS etc. there is a good career waiting for you though.
As I can see, two paths 1. SEO + your MBA - I mean SEM/as an e-marketing specialist and the later is SEO + MCA - mastering on web (web masters) , are there to proceed...
Both are having their own fun and sad days... So it's all upto your inner call to take the decision, at last.... All the best...

First - SEO is categorically "marketing consultation". While the vast SEO are focused on purely "delivering ranks"... clients are becoming far more sophisticated - in that "just ranks" don't truly justify the cost of having an SEO deliver exposure that doesn't produce sales.

Even at the next level "enhancing web site traffic" isn't all that profitable for clients as the nuances of SEO can actually have a negative impact on sales conversions... which is why clients factually hired an SEO in the first place.

The sweet spot for SEO is that:

1. mainstream marketers don't understand nor embrace search technology,

2. past/current web designers [which is the bulk of current SEOs] often ignore site usablity in favor of being "cutting edge" and/or "cool", and

3. it is far easier for a SEO consultant to learn, hire, or outsource the expertise to match "ranks" and "visits" so that higher sales conversions are possible based on the same amount of "ranks" and "visits" thus not needing to induce more of each or either... just better evaluate the assets of what the client currently has... and improve upon it.

That is where SEO must go... and there is still much room to grow.

I agree with kichus that SEO is a some sort of marketing services but being conducted online. That means while Internet grows and while search engine is the only way to discover new websites, there always be a need for SEO services. I am myself realize that more and more since I hired already two SEO companies to do work for me and I think this is not a limit.

There is quite a big difference between the two areas. And you must chose acording to what suits you best... not because financial reasons... since both of them will offer you quite a good enough check every month.

Programming/coding is for people that like tehnical things, order... that are more conservative... So if you're patient, can work a lot of time in front of computer, like order and rules than programming is for you.

SEO on the other hand is an open competition, something new every day... here you must inovate and research constantly, you must study and wathc the latest news... must be one step ahead your opponents... So if you're a fighter, always up for a challenge and you like to discover new things SEO is the right choose...

Good luck whatever you'll chose

Hey Uma, if the same situation comes to me to choose between Software development field and SEO, I'll chose the former.

Both are very interesting fields and have bright future.

It all depends upon your instincts.

God when are you going to give a chance in Software developent........
