SEO Client Issues

Over time, I have sometimes met resistance with the clients I do SEO work for and have come up with a few categories for these client issues. I am trying to ultimately come up with a common, yet comprehensive list so that I can address these issues as they come up with the clients and before they take root and become big problems. Are there any I have missed?

Fear of Change – someone at the company fears making changes to the way they have been doing things even if it is for the better.

Territory – a web designer / developer or content writer feels that their territory is being invaded by the SEO changes.

Control – Someone at the company feels they are losing control over some aspect of the website that was they once had control of.

Ego - a web designer / developer or content writer has fallen in love with their own design or text and resents anyone else touching their masterful work-of-art.

Thumbs up

They need to understand the importance of SEO, bring them traffic, and they will know how important it is. And everybody knows, a shoe can't be polished without being touched.

<...a shoe can't be polished without being touched.>

That's a great quote!

Here's another one I've seen and have been wanting to use: "A rock does not become a diamond without the right person to chisel it."

The only way you can improve is to change. This is the key thread that runs through the issues that you state. Any client who comes to you needs to realize that you can not help them without changing things on their site. Ask this up front and be sure to get a hearty YES YES... or you will pulling a donkey the whole way.

I would add to that

narrow minded CEO > who thinks that customers (who will never find the site) want to see a logo dancing around on the page for 60 seconds
while totaly ruining any possible SEO work that could have been done!

[QUOTE=gchaney]lol, a rock doesn't become a diamond with a chisel...lol

lol, you're right! I was thinking way too big. I must have been thinking of the world famous, recently discovered 12-ton "Boulder Diamond".
