Not that I've ever heard of. All that would mean is you read a book. SEO changes constantly outdating anything printed pretty quick. Really SEO is a concept (see the 605 link below). Results are everything.

In my experience certification is crap. I've got some (I don't even remeber what they are for they are so useless), but the real world never seems to match the cert requirements especially for anything technical or creative. Can you imagine the pope asking michelangello for his cert before painting the sistine chappel?

Lunacy.

They dont exist. Nor would it be acknowledged in the SEO industry. Like mccarley stated, results are everything. Being #1 for a very competative keyword says more than any piece of paper ever will.

Good points, but if you need some type of certification, I'd start by reading Aaron Wall's SEO Book - seobook.com. From there, I'd read news every day from:

Threadwatch.org
SERoundtable.com
SEO-Scoop.com
Blog.SearchEngineWatch.com
SEOmoz.org

And check out forum posts at:

forums.SEOChat.com
cre8asiteforums.com
forums.searchenginewatch.com
highrankings.com

After a month of that and attempting to optimize, you'll be at a high enough level to consider yourself 'certified' (hopefully). For all of us, even the gurus of this industry, SEO is a constant learning process. Read, read, read - that's my advice.

There are a few seo classes around. Robin Nobles (searchengineworkshops) comes to mind. Perhaps taking one of those classes and "passing" the course will be sufficient certification for your boss.

You should inform your boss that SEO certification does not exist at this time. However, like all other professions, it will likely become a reality sometime in the future. But, like attornies passing the bar or doctors passing a medical board, certification will only mean that a base knowledge of SEO has been achieved. How effective a SEO is can only be judged on results.
