SE Submissions

I've searched through the forum and not found specific info w/ regard to my question. Any help or advice is appreciated.

I've new to SEO and am wondering what the consensus is on submitting to the major engines. Is submitting once a month too much, not enough or just right? Does submitting regularly have any benefit to my ranking.

I've got a lot to learn about this, but starting here is probably as good a place as any....

Thanks!

Submitting one time only is enough 9 times out of ten. It's a myth that re-submitting on a monthly basis achieves anything.

Go to the url links on this page and submit from there per hand. Apart from the directory submissions, that is really all that need be done. Be sure however the domain has at least 2 incoming links and is of course completely optimized. Re-submission is not a bad idea if after 2-3 months ther ei sno sign of your website on an individual search engine. If you work on incoming lkinks however this is rarely necessary.

I think this way. If you optimize your site with your own or your Mothers Maiden name then may be a one time submission is enough.
I assume however that you want to do some business with your site and then you optimize your site with good choosen keywords and with this keywords you try to get listed at the top. And again in case you are the only one in the world who is doing this business, one time is enough but if not, other webmasters are thinking the same way and slow or fast you will go down if you don't watch it.

How many sites and how often then? Just not so often that you are Spamming the engine. Every search engine has an other policy in when they are feeling that the submission is no good. Altavista and Altheweb e.g. allow you 5 url within one session and you can open another session to continious. Google allows only one submission a day.

The point JanKok is that if you have a couple of incoming links you simply don't have to submit more than once. The spiders will come anyway. I never submit to google as I never have to. For new pages I'll submit to altavista and maybe fast and inktomi but just the once. Some SEOs believe that submitting to google does more harm than just letting them find the site and can influence ranking (I'm not one of them, but it doesnt help either).

Yes Alan, basically you are right. Submitting a site after you have finished it will bring the robot only a little earlier to your site but then you can influence the ranking at Google (but not only Google) by submitting the site or sites who are linking to that site (doorways). I believe it is usefullay to join programs like they have at linkstoyou.com or a registration at ranking.com.

JanKok, i completely disagree. Places like linkstoyou may get your site banned - if not now - then sometime in the future.

Google external factors (like link farms) can't get you banned. If that had been the case we would have tried very, very hard to get our competition banned by submitting them to these programs. However all linking programs are a violation to the Google quality guidelines, and Google is working very hard to make sure that you won't benefit from them. If you link back to a bad site, you could get banned, however it is very rare.

Ah, but these places REQUIRE that you use the links they provide to you to put on your site. Therefore, you would be linking back. Now, granted, Google doesn't often ban sites, but you are taking a serious risk with these kinds of places.

yes...that is a good point....and its even worse if the site you are 'reciprocating' with is entirely unrelated to your sites topic or content. [as in a links farm type site]

also...avoid getting on gigantic pages of links and especially ones that have the word 'link' in the url.
