New SEO Kid, need suggestions
Hello,
Newbie here preparing myself to develop as a freelance SEO consultant. Have over 8 years of web solution experience (web design, development, internet marketing and ecommerce consulting) but SEO has always been most fascinating to me and so I am looking to take this further.
I am requesting advice from established SEO experts to help me shape myself as a complete SEO consultant.
Where do I start?
What should I focus on?
What matters most for clients looking for SEO?
How do I develop in-depth SEO expertise?
What all it takes to become a successful SEO?
What services do I offer to attract basic SEO projects?
So please bless me with your valuable piece of advice. I would appreciate all comments, suggestions, insights in this regard. Thanks for taking the time to go through my post and helping me with this. I shall remain thankful and grateful to you forever.

Read some! If you can't be bothered to read "what is already here" surely everyone re-writing specifically for you won't change anything - you still need to read... so you may as well start with threads that exist.

Thanks for the obvious suggestion Fathom. I am already reading to my best potential (remember I am a new born kid in SEO). There is still a lot to read about and I truly understand learning never stops so is reading.
Just thought some of you experts could give some pointers or right directions. It would certainly help I guess.
Thanks again, its encouraging to see someone does care for a newbie afterall

You need to be more specific in your questions as these:
Where do I start? Start at page 1 is as good as any.
What should I focus on? Focus on what seems to work for those that are active here.
What matters most for clients looking for SEO? #1
How do I develop in-depth SEO expertise? Don't assume that someone which appear to be knowledgeable; "is" -experiment for yourself.
What all it takes to become a successful SEO? Focusing on the current project and planning for the future [only your own projects]
What services do I offer to attract basic SEO projects? Whatever you want... no can tell you your vision and make it successfful for you - if you can't make one - don't get into this racket.
The answers - aren't all that helpful - but they are accurate.

IMO, Keeping up with Industry changes and trends i a big part about being a competent SEO.
Just look at the amount of SEOs that still tout meta keyword tag optimisation as a method of ranking highly.
The SEO industry changes quickly.
Today there is a lot of emphasis on web site usability and user behaviour. Gone are the days of SEO being a purely mathematical game, its not a complex and dynamic algorithm where all of the metrics are not directly measurable so back engineering is not possible to any degree of accuracy.
The best advice is keep reading here and when you are unsure of something, ask a question.
If you are serious about it, its also worth buying some test domains and creating some spread sheets to monitor and compare various SERPs and factors.

Thanks for your suggestions Fathom. Indeed I see some right directions and I am going to follow them closely. Also your replies would help me be more specific with my questions from now onwards.

Though I hate the fact that there is nothing called knowledge bank for SEO. Everyone has to start from scratch
You wouldn't say that if you actually entered a couple of forums to find some knowledge rich threads anchored to the top...
We're a helpful lot but surely "if" you're interested in Google optimization a quick look at the Google forum "isn't all that difficult" [1 click] and that would show that "starting from stratch isn't starting from scratch"... you just got to be willing to learn to eat on your own vice being spoonfed.
