SEO Charging

Question....

When doing SEO work, is it better to charge by the Job or per month or per hour?

Being a Marketing guy fresh out of college, my assumption would be to charge 500-1000$ initially to revamp 50-200 pages of content. From there, I would charge a fee per month on a 3-month contract with options to extend. There was a good article posted today regarding 6 ways to evaluate SEO, I think this is a good way to show your clients how successful you've been. People always like it when your surprise them and they get more than they expected.

* Also, simply think about how much money your services are worth to your potential client. IF they are going to make $20K/ month more because of your SEO, then It's probably worth atleast 10% (or $2k) for them to have the increase business.

Just my 2 Cents.

It really depends on the difficulty of the keyword. For example "Tampa Bay Snowboard Rentals" would be extremly easy to obtain and therefore you can charge accordingly (or whatever a few hours of your time is worth).

On the other hand "Web Hosting" would be hard to obtain a page 1 spot and require several hours of work. You would want to charge a higher rate (preferably hourly) if the client is ok with this.

I have charged out monthly in the past: "If I can keep your keyword on page 1 of GG, Y! or MSN for each month I would get $$$ amount of dollars". If I couldn't rank on page one on any of these for the month, then they don't pay. The client loves this because they are guaranteed results (a page 1 ranking). Just make sure you get them ranked so you get paid (I have never NOT gotten paid using this method, plus it sounds more reasonable for the customer).

Clients have chosen you because they trusted you, as the one they are looking for who can contribute for the progress of their business in the market place, so be valuable in your price as a proof that you are great and the best among the best SEO.
