Surprisingly, they own the websites and content we develop at the end of the contract. If they pull out before then, we get the content and URL. Typically contracts run for 3-5 years with an option to renew - we've only had 1 come up so far and they've stayed with us, so it's fairly stable as long as performance is going well.

The problem with affiliate programs is that there's always going to be massive competition who can offer exactly what you offer. In our situation we're presenting absolutely unique products and services - stuff you can't find elsewhere. If we see a competitor with similiar products, we can tell the company they need to be more aggressive about pricing, shipping, fulfillments, new products, etc.

Thumbs up

It sounds like a great opportunity to generate more income. Your efforts are more performance based rather than time based. It is definetely more risky and less traditional, but I bet in the long run you end up with happier customers, more job satisfaction, more learning opportunities, and most of all, a retirement full of lobster tails and martinis.

I think in any industry, the best consultants are always charging a percent of the profits instead of a cut-rate amount. Our business model is very similiar to Rand's, and I couldn't imagine any other way of doing business. We're at the point now where we readily turn down business, or as in today's case, offer them a rate twice the norm to see if they bite (they did).

If you've got a proven track record, know you can increase the client's business, and *aren't* charging a percent, I think you need to reconsider. Be forewarned however, getting people to the website isn't enough -- in this game, search traffic is nothing -- it's all about the conversions.

I have been looking for a SEO to work on commission. The site is a directory site for recipes. It needs some major promoting but the site design is good, the content is great, and it is ready to go mainstream.

I am willing to pay more than the fair share RESIDUALLY for good help. Please PM if you have the skills and are interested.

Thanks,
chad

Generally this is true, but there is a third category:

Small sites who need you and with your help become big sites which can afford you (and value you as a proven resource).

I have worked with and continue to build on several such startup enterprise relationships.

Very true. Especially if the business has something solid to offer. We all have to start out somewhere -

I no longer work on commission. My evolution in this ever-changing career has taken me to a fixed rate/monthly/12 month minimum. I no longer want to be married to gigantic sites and sit at the round table of rejected learning each morning.
To remain a free spirit I have chosen to take sites to an elevated level (hair pull out) and then turn them over to real professionals. I don’t mess around with price because I prefer my underlings do all the work, so I can drink Corona beer with a wedge of lime on a hot Florida day - Price
