It's been said now a days that recipricol linking is going out of style, since people are linking between their own sites and further abusing the original intention of linking.
Now becoming popular is three-way linking which is A links to B, B links to C, and C to A. This makes it look more as if each site is linking without benefit to another.

It's also been said (by Matt Cutts if I remember rightly) that 3-way link exchanges are just as easy to detect as 2 way ones...
And - it's been said (by me - ) that 2 way link exchanges are still perfectly viable / valuable, so long as the interlinking sites have some relevance to each-other.

Interesting comment. Recips are not the problem "only recips are". 3-way links are not the problem "only 3-way links are".
I have a directory that has "only outbound links"... and others link to it because it is a "directory" and it is "free"... not a single link was every requested with "link to me or I won't link to you" or "link to me, I'll link to him, he links to you - or don't and we won't".
So while recips and 3-ways are great - they will only get you so far... at some point you need to offer 'real value'.

Agreed, same pattern is problem, beacuse it looks unnatural.

Because i have seen a lot of website got good page rank and results by doing link exchange. So quality never die... if you do link exchange with quality and relevancy then its not harmfull for your website alsthough will give benefits to your website............

Reciprocal links are no more relevent now as they are more like barter system so people use them for getting links but from irrelevent sites .
Nower days only 3way links are good or a 1way link beacuase it adds to your credibility and more over you are required to have these links from relevent sites only.i.e if you are an advertising firm so links from the same theme would only count and matter.

Bullcrap!
Most of the web is created of reciprocal links e.g. Google Directory links to DMOZ and DMOZ links to Google Directory.
Regardless of the "intent" that neither Google nor DMOZ said "I give you a link if you give me one"... the "recip pattern is there".
It's not the fact that a website links to another website that links back... it's the continuous repetitively used pattern "ONLY" that offers limited value... and 3-way links, 4-way links, or x-way links suffer the same fate "ASOLUTELY".
You can start with recips and you'll get the identical value as any other link scheme but it will only get you far so before you start going in reverse.
