Whacked For Advertising on Forums?
Hi,
I am planning on launching a site in a few weeks. I have found approximately 20 forums which would be useful to promote my site on.
However I have heard that if a domain name is posted to a lot of forums Google will read it as spamming forums to get backlinks and penalise the site.
It would be good to promote my site on these forums but I dont want my site to be penalised.

Are you planning to only use forums for promotion?

No. I plan to use a number of methods.
My site is a niche marketplace so the people on the forum may able to use to find new customers so I will be aiming to spam random forums but to target relevant forums.

So can I be whacked for promoting my site on forums?

Not unless you overdo it.
But why are you aiming for forums anyway?

Lets say purely for example my site is a graphic design marketplace and I post my site on graphic design forums then the graphic designers on the forum will be able to access my site, register and apply for graphic design jobs.
That's my plan.

It sounds like a decent plan, but you'll need more. Lots more.
For starters, most forum links don't count as real backlinks, and every site needs proper backlinks to survive...

Yes but Im not interested in Google juice from the forums. I just want the users of the forums to follow the link.
But I dont want to Google to think I am spanning forums and penalise me which is what I have heard can happen.

Your links within the forums will likely be nofollow. Google will ignore your posts/links.
If you are posting on relevant forums, you may get some traffic from interested parties dependent upon your posting skills and the reputation you build on the forum(s). If the forum admins/moderators believe you are spamming their forum(s), they will likely penalize/ban you and delete your posts. If you are a true contributor, you may get some traffic/customers from those relevant forums.

There is nothing wrong with advertising... just make sure paid links are designated as such with the rel="nofollow" attribute in the link element.
If your plan isn't to advertise but to "manipulate organic results with paid link solutions"... YES, eventually you will get PENGUINized.
