Almost all (at least the ones you should be focusing on) DONT use meta.

Only small search engines use meta nowadays.

Yahoo! and Inktomi use meta data. In fact on their search help pages they even tell you that they request both a description and the meta keywords tags.

Their approach to search is that the more they know about a page the better off they are...

Yes but I dont think it's used for SERP rank. Yahoo! will grab your description but Google wont.

    They say: http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/ysearc...anking-02.html

    • Use a "description" meta-tag and write your description accurately and carefully. After the title, the description is the most important draw for users. Make sure the document title and description attract the interest of the user but also fit the content on your site.

Yes Yahoo! will show a META description but thats ONLY for the users. This information doesnt help your rank. At least it shouldn't.

Hey you two goonbob's: this thread is almost 10 years old, things may have changes some since then. Besides it not being too informative anyway. Your 2 comments didn't even help.

    Hi,
The description attribute of the meta tag is very important. The content of this tag gives you a short summary of the content of the website and although it is not visible on the website, it is seen in search engine results as part of the search snippet.

In the early days, the content of this tag directly affected a website’s search engine ranking. In fact, some search engines like Baidu, which is a Chinese search engine, still consider meta description content as a ranking factor. Google, however, has made it clear that the content in the meta description tag has no direct effect on search rankings. Note, no direct effect; meta descriptions are proven to indirectly affect search rankings.
