For SEO Professionals, How Do you Describe Your Work?

For all those who do freelance SEO or do it for a living full-time, how do you describe your work to your friends and family. Personally for me, I do SEO work for a start-up and freelance on the side, and find it difficult to give a simple 1 sentence answer (e.g. Hi, my name is John Doe and I'm an Engineer, I'm an Accountant, I'm a Doctor, etc.) to people who are completely oblivious to the field of work.

Obviously, when you're communicating with other internet marketers, you can simply say I do SEO for XYZ company, but when it comes to everyone else it's pretty tough.

    I tell people I'm a fighter pilot. It's a more interesting conversation.

Seriously though, I say online marketing, internet marketing, or search engine marketing, but am starting to consider just telling people that I'm a webmaster.

I usually say that "I'm the guy who brings fortunes to my clients via their #1 placement in Google because we're 'Web traffic Controllers!'"

And while I can't guarantee anything serp wise, we do pretty good by letting folks know we can bring your site traffic!!

Ba-DUM-pshhhhh...thank you, thank you - tip your waitress. try the steak.

I usually tell people something ridiculously cocky like "You know when you search Google and something comes up #1? Yeah, I put it there."
