Role of social bookmarking in SEO

I am new to this whole concept of Search Engine Optimization and I have managed to access the primary information. I wanted to know how social bookmarking will help in optimization.

Its main purpose is to spread awareness about your site thereby giving a boost to your traffic which is obviously the main purpose of the whole optimization process.

Social bookmarkings help SEO to generate traffics at the same time it can be a source of back links if there is no follow.

The purpose of getting linked to Social Book Marking Sites is to make people aware of your site(s) so that you get more and more clients . but before starting linking to these sites make sure that those sites have visitors coming.. or you whole process will be in vain

Are all the social bookmarking links nofollow, if they are are there any seo benefits?

when linking a press release to my bookmark, will the keyword links still be active?

It can be good if you build up a good reputation at the social bookmarking site and offer worthwhile content. People will hear the buzz and if they like your content you can get organic backlinks from them.

is there any advice anyone can give on building reputations while keeping transparency? Isn't it hard to post links on bookmarking sites without people realizing you're just trying to get your client a backlink?
